The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay's campus hospital has now been converted into a COVID-19 vaccination centre. With this, the IIT Bombay will have its own vaccination centre. Around 140 campus residents, including faculty members, got vaccinated on Wednesday, the first day of the drive. Over 6,000 residents are eligible for the jab.

While speaking about the same, Subhasis Chaudhuri, Director, IIT Bombay said the idea of setting up the centre was to be prepared for the drive once it opens for students. โ€œOnce our students are eligible for the vaccine, we will not spend time in setting up the centre,โ€ he told a media house.

Civic authorities inspected the facility before giving a nod. โ€œAvailability of vaccines on campus will give a boost to our fight against the pandemic and we hope that our students (who are mostly under 45 years) will be allowed to get vaccines in the near future as this is very much required to bring the campus back to life,โ€ said Chaudhuri on social media.

Earlier, IIT Bombay had increased restrictions and informed students to avoid visiting shops and retail outlets outside the campus unless it is an emergency. Over 3,000 students have returned to the campus for offline lab, research work and use of technical infrastructure till now.

All those students who have returned to the campus will now have to seek permission from their respective hostel warden and head to step outside the campus. A student of IIT Bombay, on the request of anonymity, said, "We have received a direction from the institute administration to step outside the campus only if it is necessary. We have to take written permission from the warden in case we have to go outside campus for some work."

Among these 3,000 students, the majority are from Undergraduate (UG) programmes who have returned to the campus because they were facing technical difficulties in pursuing virtual education due to electric power failure in their native villages, lack of internet network or WiFi connection.
