IIT Kanpur PhD Eligibility & Highlights 2024
IIT Kanpur offers a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme of three-year duration. IITK admission process for PhD programme is conducted twice a year, i.e., July and December. Admission to this programme may be made directly based on the scores obtained by the candidates in the entrance exam along with other factors. The institute has not released the placement report incorporating the overall data for the 2026 drive. However, the institute have disclosed the 2026 placement statistics till Phase I. No, you can't get admission in IIT Kanpur with 60% in Class 12. The institute accepts students who have a minimum of 75% (for general category) in Class 12. Even for the reserved categories, the minimum score is 65%. Hence, 60% is not enough to get admission in IIT Kanpur UG courses.

- After the application process is over; students have to go through various selection rounds for final admission. The institute considers the merit of the candidates for MBA and PhD admission.
- For BTech, MDes, MSc, BSc and MTech courses, JEE Advanced, IIT JAM CEED and GATE scores are considered for the selection of candidates.
- Additionally, admission to PhD and MS by Research is based on UGC NET/ CSIR NET and other national-level exam scores.
- After the exams, JoSAA, COAP and CCMN Counselling are conducted for seat allotment to BTech, M.Tech and MSc courses. However, a merit list is released by the institute for announcing the names of the candidates shortlisted for certificate, PhD and MS by Research courses followed by a counselling round. Candidates need to pay the admission fee to confirm their admission.
IIT Kanpur accepts JEE Advanced ranks for admission to the BTech and other courses. JEE Advanced cutoff 2025 has been released for admission to IIT Kanpur. The round 1 cutoff for the General AI category candidates is ranged between 270 and 9662. the lowest rank one can achieve is, 270 for B.Tech. in Computer Science Engineering for the General All India category candidates. In addition to that, CSE was the most competitive course among all the courses. Similarly, for the OBC AI category candidates, the CSE still having the lowest rank of 142. IIT Kanpur PhD Admission Process 2024
IIT Kanpur PhD application process is conducted in both online and offline modes. Interested students can visit the official website of IIT Kanpur PG admission, i.e. https://iitk.ac.in/doaa/pgadmission/ and click on ‘Important Links’ followed by the application form filling and online payment of application fee. Additionally, students can also download the application form from the above process and submit the filled form offline. Those willing to apply for more than one course must fill up separate application forms for each programme.
The application fee is INR 500 for General, EWS, OBC and OBC-NCL candidates and INR 250 for SC/ ST and all DAP candidates. However, the application fee is waived for candidates in the 'Foreign National' category.
NOTE: PhD applicants must arrange for two letters of reference as well. For this, the names of the referees along with their e-mail ids must be disclosed by the candidate at the online applications portal. The referees will be contacted electronically through an auto-generated mail with a request to submit their recommendations online.

No, you can't get direct admission in IIT Kanpur. The institute only offers entrance-based admissions. Students must meet both the general eligibility and selection requirements to get a seat at the institute. Some of the accepted exams include JEE Mains/ JEE Advanced/ GATE/ IIT JAM, etc.
IIT Kanpur accepts GATE scores for admission to the M.Tech course. No, IIT Kanpur admissions are not possible without JEE scores if the students wants to join BTech or BSc courses. For both courses, JEE Main is mandatory. Also, for BTech admissions, students also need to appear for the JEE Advanced exam.
