Commonly asked questions
On Admissions
Q:   How do I get into SMIT Sikkim?
A:

To get admission into SMIT Sikkim, first check the eligibility criteria for your desired course because some of the admissions are based on merit and others entrance-based. Apply online through the official website of Sikkim Manipal University. The applications are usually opened in November. Candidates are shortlisted based on scores obtained in national-level entrance exams like JEE Main, NET, CAT, or MAT. For those candidates who do not have scores from such exams, SMIT conducts its entrance exam. In addition to GDPI, an MBA aspirant has to go through Group Discussion and Personal Interview. On getting shortlisted, they have to pay the admission fee to reserve the seat.

Q:   I have scored 60% in Class 12. Am I eligible to get admissions into BBA course at SMIT, Sikkim Manipal University?
A:

The basic eligibility criteria required for admissions to the BBA course at SMIT, Sikkim Manipal University, is that candidates must complete their Class 12 in any stream with at least an aggregate of 50% marks. If candidates have secured 60% in their Class 12, they are eligible to enroll in the course, and there is a chance that they will get admission.

However, this is not definite if the candidate has secured 60% in their Class 12, so they will definitely get admission to the BCA course. Because the admission is based on merit, and the institute offers a limited number of seats. Hence, there is a chance that candidates with higher scores will fill the seats of the BCA course.

Review from a first year student.
Placements: 70-80 percent of students are placed from my course. The highest package is around 12 LPA, and the lowest is 2 LPA-3 LPA. Microsoft, Dell, Amazon, etc., are recruiting companies. 85-90 percent of students got internships with top recruiters like Accenture, Amazon, IBM, as software engineer, data analysts, and full-stack developers.
Infrastructure: Wi-Fi-enabled smart classrooms, advanced labs, supported by a large library with centralised air-conditioners, 24/7 power backup, hostels with attached bathrooms, a health centre inside the campus, sports complex with pool, gym with multiple activities room.
Faculty: The teachers are very helpful, qualified, and knowledgeable. The teaching quality of the teachers is excellent, and the course is regulated and overseen by UCG. It makes the students industry-ready as the college trains the students for the industry. The semester exams are moderately hard in this college. The pass percentage is 35 percent.

B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering - Batch of 2027

Good infrastructure, a worthy off-campus view, knowledgeable faculty members, and average placements
Placements: I am currently in my 5th semester of B.Tech (CSE), and the most recent pass-out 2025 batch are placed in reputed companies. In our 5th semester, recently a US healthcare company, Vivnovation, visited offering ₹15,000 per month as an intern role and a PPO of 22 LPA on satisfactory work performance. This year, the 2025 pass-out percentage of students placed stood at 76.5%, with 268 getting placed out of 350. The highest in-campus package offer is by Amazon, PwC, and Microsoft, which are 14 LPA, 12 LPA, and 8 LPA respectively. The roles are SAP Consultant and TS.
Infrastructure: The classrooms are well-equipped with proper seating arrangements and basic facilities. Every classroom is a smart class (no A/C). The labs are all Wi-Fi enabled with modern computers and architecture (A/C enabled). The library is big, well maintained, and has a large collection of books and reading space. Extra books can be provided on demand. Basic hostel facilities include bed, mattress, pillow, and bathroom items. Every room has average Wi-Fi with 16 Mbps speed. Mess food quality is low and not very nutritious. Medical, sports, gym, and games are well maintained and worth it.
Faculty: Teachers mostly are well qualified and knowledgeable, with good teaching methods, leaving some with a very rigid and boring way of teaching, which, we all can agree, happens in every college. The curriculum needs to be revised with modern subjects, and a big change is required in the first-year syllabus. Semester exams are application-based with good conceptual questions and average evaluation guidelines. There are two midterms of 50 marks summed up into 30, two quizzes of 5 marks each, 5 marks for attendance, 5 for assignment, and a 50-mark end-semester examination.
Other: Well, I got a 40% scholarship on fests due to my JEE rank, and this is a good option to go with for a CSE degree. The professors are okay, and the curriculum is good enough. You get a lot of time to work on your personal skills. Coding culture is too low, that can be worked upon, and clubs mostly begin normally but get lost in interior politics down the line. Fests are okay but can be made far better if the administration actually opens up and looks at things other than just academics. Crowd has increased definitely.

B.Sc. in Computer Science (AI and IoT) - Batch of 2027

All-around campus with good infrastructure.
Placements: Currently B.Sc. Computer Science (specialized in AI and IoT) is a newly formed branch that comes under the electronics and communication department, and I am the first batch student of this course. Placement is not initiated as we are currently in the second year of this course.
Infrastructure: The infrastructure and faculty are good. Many facilities are provided by the department as well as the college. We can do whatever project we want to perform, and our department supports our projects and needs. Wi-Fi quality is a bit disappointing on campus, almost everyone uses 5G in college because Jio 5G has very high internet speed on campus.
Faculty: Faculty are well-experienced, we can say more than 10-12 years of experience in teaching. Co-curricular activities took place frequently, where we could showcase multiple talents and take part in various tech-related events. Exams are strict and fair, and there is no chance of cheating or any malpractice.
Other: I chose this course to take a good course under low fees compared to B.Tech, whose fees are high, and I have an interest in both computer and electronics. By taking this course, I can engage with both of these, which may not have been possible if I had just taken B.Tech in computer science and this. The annual fest is of a flagship level where multiple events take place, and amazing artists come and perform for us. Overall, college is good with decent placement records.

Review of Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology.
Placements: Around 70% of students are placed in B.Tech CSE, which is approximately 100 to 150 students. The highest package for B.Tech CSE is around 25 LPA, and the lowest is around 7 LPA. Top recruiting companies include Dell, Microsoft, Amazon, Flipkart, and many more. Almost all students from the B.Tech CSE department secure jobs and internships.
Infrastructure: SMIT has six academic blocks, including labs, workshops, a library, and reading rooms. Besides this, it also has two hostels, one for boys and one for girls. The campus includes one ground and a sports block with a swimming facility. The hostel facilities are good, with each room accommodating two students and a floor warden assigned to each floor. The food in the mess is also good.
Faculty: The teaching faculty members are well-disciplined and well-educated. They have good teaching experience and an effective management system for all students. The course curriculum consists of programming and electrical knowledge, which prepares students well for jobs. Semester exams are not very difficult, and the passing percentage is 35%.

The college is good, you get good education, and can live a college life.
Placements: The package in our college is like 3 to 4 Lacs per year, which is an average package for a beginner, and it is good to start with it. Many companies offer here, such as HDFC, Occitan, etc. 79 percent of the students get jobs, and they get the post of human resources manager.
Infrastructure: The infrastructure is very good. The college has many buildings and has a playground. All facilities are available. The hostel is also very big the hostel rooms are spacious and hygienic. There is a marina where there is good food and indoor games, a gym, etc.
Faculty: The teachers are well educated and qualified. Everyone is friendly, and they teach us very well. No one is late for the classes. The semester exams are tough, and the passing mark is 35%. I think it does not make the students industry-ready, as the college does not take students on industrial visits.
Other: I choose this course because I want to learn about business and start my own business. If there were an industrial visit in our college, it would be better for us to know about the production in industry.

I am happy with my decision to join college as it is better than my expectations.
Placements: The college is overall good for me. Students in our batch are less than 15. We usually get offers for internships from the 3rd year. I am currently in my 2nd year, I can't say anything about placements. After completing B.Sc. in mathematics, students get many options in different sectors like business, banking, etc.
Infrastructure: Our college provides facilities and infrastructure. The whole campus is Wi-Fi enabled. Students can go to the library for studies. Classrooms are well-maintained. There are labs for every department. In the hostel, students get two choices to stay one for single and one for double. Students get a gym, a swimming pool, and an indoor court for basketball and badminton. Students can use an outdoor court as their choice.
Faculty: Lecturers and professors are well-qualified. Teachers in our department are very helpful in both academic and non-academic fields. The rule of exams is that there are 2 semesters every year, and in each semester, 2 sessional exams are conducted for 50 marks, and 2 quizzes are conducted for 10 marks.
Other: I chose B.Sc. math because only a few members graduated in mathematics in my state. I face less number of challenges as there are more opportunities in my state for students to complete graduation in mathematics.
