Engineering Lingo: Things students say

Students are known to live in a world of their own. What’s more is that you can often find them conversing among themselves and people around them are left wondering what these chaps are actually up to (or that is at least what happens to me).

While LOL, OMG, selfie, and ridic are some common slangs used by students which can easily be interpreted but other terms used by them such as abs (absolutely) or adorbs (adorable) are the ones that actually get us flummoxed.

Just like, specific lingo is used by Delhi University (DU) students to interact. Similarly, students studying at different engineering colleges are also known to use some takiya-kalam words.

So, to educate you on the lingo used at engineering colleges, Shiksha spoke to a few students to find out what are the words one can expect to be thrown around if they set step in an engineering educational institute.

Hooking up: This term is used when engineering students want to communicate that they will be meeting or contacting someone.

Powering up: This term means switching on a device.

Cab: This term is used to refer to a cabinet.

App: This is the short form of the word – apply. Engineering students use this term when they want to talk about how they are applying for a course abroad or at a higher educational institute in India.

Arbit: This term is used to describe something/someone that is not the way it should be.

Bandhe: Just another term to refer to a friend, similar to using the term ‘buddy’.

Chamkaa: The literal meaning of this word is shining but in engineering lingo, it is used to indicate an understanding of something that has been recently explained to you.

Chikna: Used to refer to a guy who has a fair complexion and is clean shaven.

Crack: This word is used in the IITs by students when they are sure they will clear an exam.

Convo: Refers to the convocation hall, where degrees are awarded, and more importantly, where movies are screened.

Cheers: No one says thank you at an engineering college they all say – Cheers.

Qutiyapa: A term commonly used in almost all colleges in India. This word is used when a person acts stupidly.

Dassi: This term is used to refer to a person who has scored a 10 pointer in academics.

Diro: The director of the institute is referred as Diro.

DOSA: When this term is used in an engineering college, it often does not mean that someone is talking about a dosa. It is in fact used to refer to – Dean of Student Affairs.

Fart: In most IITs, this term is used to refer to something which is untrue or wildly exaggerated. People who fart are referred to as – fartoos. This word can also be used to refer to anything that is bad. So, the usage can be like fart movie, fart class, fart professor so on and so forth. Lol!

Fuccka/Farra: Refers to the FF and FR grades in classes or subjects.

Footer: This term is used to refer to football.

Fattu: this term is used to refer to someone who is a coward.

GodGiri: This term is used to talk about anything or anyone who is simply brilliant.

Gult or Gulte: People from Andhra Pradesh are called Gults. The origin of this word is not very clear, but it is often said that this slang originated from the word – Telugu, which is the language spoken by gults. Telugu when spelt backwords sounds like "Gulutey", which changed to "Gult" with the passage of time.

LT: This term is used to refer to the lecture theatre.

MB: The short form for the – Main Building, where the institute's administrative and financial offices are present.

Lite: Just like in the smurfs’ language that use ‘smurf’ in every sentence similarly, NIT Warangal’s children use lite in each and every sentence and its meaning varies from sentence to sentence. So, while Light hai means that there is a solution to every problem in life, Light raha kar is used when you want to ask someone to just chill.

TT: Commonly used in BITS Pilani, TT is the short form for – test topper.

Acads: This term is used to refer to academics.

Zuc: This term is mostly used at BITS Pilani to refer to zero. Students mostly use this term when their test scores/marks are declared.

Calci: This term is the short form for the word calculator.

Kanyakumari: This is a term freshers will mostly come across at BITS Pilani. Kanyakumari is the space underneath the table or bed in a hostel room.

Shimla: Another term which freshers are sure to hear at BITS Pilani. Shimla is the upper slab in a hostel room and freshers in Kanyakumari are often asked to interact with freshers in Shimla.
