IITs too have faculty crunch shows student-teacher ratio
JEE Main 2017 exam is all set to be held in May. Soon after the exam is over, the Joint Seat Allocation Process 2017 (counselling) for admissions to IITs, NITs, IIITs, GFTIs will commence.
Before you register for the online choice filling process, let's talk about something that has been a part of the ever existing IITs for quite some time. Faculty Crunch. These two words have become synonymous to the premier IITs due to its strong presence across these institutes.
It's quite a known fact that faculty shortage is a common thing at IITs - be it the new or the old ones. The wide gap between the students-teacher ratio too cannot be ignored. If reports are to be believed, there are over 2500 seats which are lying vacant across these colleges. For more than 60k students, these colleges have less than 4500 teachers. The point to note here is that according to the HRD Ministry, the recommended student-teacher ratio for the IITs is only 10 students per teacher (10:1).

The reasons behind this faculty shortage at India's best engineering institutes are many, some of them include inadequate shortage, lack of incentives, extensive recruitment process etc. And unless and until these are taken care of, the situation is going to remain the same forever.
Improved remunerations, increasing the retirement age, hiring retired teachers on a contractual basis, relaxing guidelines for hiring Indian as well as foreign nationals as faculty might be some of the ways in which this situation can be curtailed.
