For admissions to law courses in Tamil Nadu, Candidates must qualify some of the popular exams and they are:

• CLAT: The national-level Common Law Admission Test  (or CLAT) is conducted by the Consortium of NLUs for admission to 5-year integrated LLB (UG) and one-year LLM (PG) courses. All the seats of NLUs will be filled on the basis of CLAT 2023 reservation criteria as defined by the consortium.
• LSAT India: LSAT India examination is a standardized test to assess the skills of law aspirants on the basis of advanced reading skills,  critical thinking, and informal and deductive reasoning skills. The exam is conducted by the Law School Admission Council also known as LSAC Global for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate law courses at associated law colleges.

NIRF scores Teaching+Learning (100), Research (100), Graduation Outcomes (100), Outreach (100), Perception (100) for all its categories, including Law. The Law rankings of NIRF in 2025 show three top colleges, with Shanmugha Arts Science Technology & Research Academy  (SASTRA) in Thanjavur to be the best at rank 11. VIT School of Law Chennai offers admission to UG and PG courses based on entrance exam scores. The school considers CLAT or VITLEE scores for BA LLB (Hons) and BBA LLB (Hons). For LLM, admission is based on AILET, AIAT or CLAT-PG scores. Aspirants need to first apply for the preferred course to participate in the selection rounds. Aspirants selected based on entrance exam scores further need to pass the GDPI round for final admission.
