Becoming the jack of all trades and master of none has its own advantages: Aishwarya Kulkarni

2 mins readUpdated on Jun 3, 2019 13:09 IST
It did teach me a lot. As a frog, I jumped from one department to another. Not because I wasn’t good at what I did but because they trusted my capabilities.

I have been a K.V. (CBSE) student my whole life - till XII standard. I was never interested in Science (as a future career option). The other field available in school was Commerce - which was a good fit for me back then. I have always been more inclined towards activities like book/newspaper reading, participating in group discussions/debates, hosting/anchoring events, and the likes. And I never had stage fear.

So after my XII, I opted for BBA course at Gogte College of Commerce, Belgaum. I knew I would get more opportunities for such activities that would enhance my skills and ultimately enjoy doing what I like along with the curriculum. For MBA admissions, yes, I did apply for coaching classes, during my final BBA semester. I prepared for MAT and PGCET and gave both exams. I cracked admission in KLS Gogte Institute of Technology via my PGCET ranking.

Well, the best way to prepare for the entrance test is to apply for good coaching classes because these guys know the trends, have the proper learning formats and courses and have good faculties that you can trust. Also, you tend to be more disciplined and focused in terms of learning and aiming to get admissions in good colleges.

Tips? Well, I would say that if you know what college & course you want to apply for, just check what they are looking at, what are the requirements - eligibility, ranking, etc. Study hard to get a good rank. The only major effort is to get through the admissions. Once you are in, you will just enjoy. Otherwise, you will have to settle for something you weren’t looking for.

My college life was excellent. I spent more time in college than at home. My mom still complains about it. Professors were good with their teaching methods, also adapted to the students' needs and were friendly and I am still in touch with them. I participated in a lot of management fests and came back with trophies, making them proud.

My first job taught me how to say ‘NO’. Being a fresher and full of energy, I was all ready to do tasks that were not in my job profile, making me the jack of all trades and master of none.

It did teach me a lot. As a frog, I jumped from one department to another. Not because I wasn’t good at what I did but because they trusted my capabilities. But in the end, you have to choose at least one profile/expertise that you need to master and that you can carry forward in your life for your future career path. Learning should never stop.

My college didn’t have a dual specialization. I wished it had. I chose HR as my specialization. It helped me a lot in enhancing my stage skills, event management and soft skills.
