Group Discussion (GD) Topics & PI Experience by Madhur Nema, IIFM Bhopal
In a recent conversation with Shiksha, Madhur Nema talks about his experience of GD & PI process for admission at Indian Institute of Forest Management, Bhopal. He talks about questions asked by the panelists and also has a few tips for aspiring students.
Q. Did you go through the GD & PI process for admission?
At IIFM we have WAT and PI. So instead of GD, we got to write a small essay on a topic.
Q. What were the WAT topics at the time of your admission?
WAT topics at our time were-
1. Demonization
2. Is Jallikattu justified?
3. Should Indian politics refrain from referendums?
In essence, whatever the hot topics that were prevailing at that time were asked about.
Q. What were the focus areas during your GD preparation?
WAT requires you to sum up your knowledge as well as your opinion on the topic while looking for continuity.
Q. What topics should be focused upon for WAT?
Read about the current hot topics for e.g Triple Talak, Chandrayan 2, Scrapping of article 370 but don't overlook the other topics that have been in limelight this year.
Q. Did you take any help (coaching centers/materials) to prepare for your WAT?
No, not required.
Q. How many panelists and participants were there?
There were 20 of us in WAT.
Read about the current hot topics but don't overlook other topics that have been in limelight throughout the year.
Q. Who were the panelists in your WAT & PI? How difficult were they to tackle? What was your overall strategy to tackle the panel and what worked?
The current hostel warden and marketing management professor were the panelists. They both are very nice and humble and if you get them as your panelists, don't worry your interview will go down very well as long as you got your basics.
Q. What were the questions asked in your PI?
Very generic stuff. They asked me about myself, about my previous education. They wanted to know why I wanted to pursue MBA after engineering, why I chose IIFM(It being a sectoral MBA college), my opinion about demonitization and there was some discussion related to RTI.
Q. How did you prepare for your PI?
To be honest, I didn't prepare a lot because this college was very low in my priority list. PI is chilled out and if you show intent, you are through.
Q. What strategies (books/reference materials/coaching) did you apply for preparation of PI?
Nothing much. Just browsed their website a bit for some information about the college.
Q. Did you happen to panic at any given pint of time during the WAT & PI? Any particular moment in which you wanted to go back and change or may perform better?
There were no such moments.
Q. How was your overall WAT & PI experience?
The experience was good. overall, it seemed to be more of a discussion and less of an interview. they want to know what is your motivation to join IIFM, if it is just an MBA and money then maybe you should look for a better general MBA course. If you have some attachment to the environment, society, etc., you will find this experience at IIFM enthralling.
Q. What tips do you have for the aspirants appearing for WAT & PI?
WAT: Read about the current topics, practise writing and avoid grammatical mistakes.
PI: Revise your basics, have good knowledge of current topics and happenings. Be ready to answer why IIFM?
