Mystory@Amit Arora: How my college education impacted my career
I studied Sustainable Development in my MBA as a major from BIMTECH. Although, the course was newly introduced in the year 2009 if I remember correctly, fortunately the curriculum of the course was refined and intrinsic. During my study, we had two long internships and six trimesters with nearly 30 subjects in two years. The subjects ranged from Financial Management to Health Economics, Corporate Communications to Rural Marketing.
Being an Electrical Engineer, I was miserable in learning up the theoretical aspects of subjects, but I always advocated the use of engineering in solving problems of society. Consequently, I never wished to study typical Marketing, Finance and HR stuff in my MBA and completely steered away from my Engineering field. I decided to study a more inclusive course which could offer me a more futuristic view of management and society. During my course, I learned how the economy works at the micro level with its various parameters of development, why finance is not just about playing with derived numbers, and how operations can actually make a business process reformative. My course in sustainable development had basic and segmented elements of all major branches of MBA including Marketing, Finance, Operations and HR. One of the major learnings of the course was the rural economy dynamics and technology derivations of a changing world.
I regret missing my Financial management and Accounts classes. Being from engineering background, I never showed any inclination towards those subjects but unfortunately I paid for that by struggling in basics of finance for initial two years of my career.
Take away was, India needs more problem solving managers rather than problem managing managers!!
