Out of CA but into my dream course: Poonji Lala

4 mins readUpdated on Feb 20, 2019 14:01 IST

After 10th grade, I pursued Commerce as my stream. After I completed my 12th grade, I took up CA for further studies. But I couldn't get through my entrance exams due to my extreme disliking for the Accounts subject.

After opting out of CA, I started getting inclined towards media and marketing related ideas and articles. I started learning more about it and applied for my ATMA entrance exam right after college was over. I applied to a few colleges, one of which was Vivekanand Education Society Institute of Management. VESIM, because of its detailed course structure and feasible fee structure, encouraged me to opt for it. I had a GD-PI round before the final selection.

Its course curriculum covers a lot of practical learning concepts along with theory. It offers four specializations, one of which includes an international program in management. The fees can be paid semester-wise using different modes. It also includes SAS as a core subject as a base for Business Analytics. It gives upgraded industry knowledge provided by various industry experts on a regular basis, on the college campus itself. The placement opportunities available are good. The faculty and other staff members are very knowledgeable, highly experienced and approachable. They help strike the right balance of placing the principles of our rich culture and value systems along with the understanding of modern electronic education firm among students. They take responsibility in making each individual industry-ready.

After my decision to pursue MBA as my career, I started researching for various colleges and their entrance exam requirements. They differed in their admission procedures and syllabus patterns. After a thorough idea about the various entrance exams being accepted at these colleges, I first decided to appear for ATMA exam. I did not opt for any coaching classes for my entrance exams. I did a thorough study of the subjects I was good at with the help of self-study material from Time coaching and some references from YouTube. After clearing my ATMA exam, I decided to opt for a PGDM program at VESIM for which I had a GD-PI round for the final selection. This procedure included a group discussion on current scenarios at a round table seating between ten students, followed by a personal interview by the college faculty, which included questions about past academic results, areas of interest, hobbies, etc. After the final round, the selected students received a mail regarding the admission process. This involved detailed information about the PGDM program offered, with also includes SAS online course that helps provide an analytical edge among students. The curriculum starts with a three-day Outbound Program Activity which helps students boost their confidence by improving their communication and performing skills.

The PGDM program at VESIM starts with a Foundation Course for a period of one month. It covers topics which involve basic Business Management education along with the personal growth lab subject that in turn gives students the ability to perform and excel in a challenging business environment. The course structure at VESIM covers actual application-based concepts with theory. During the provided lecture schedule, there takes place a lot of interaction among students and teachers in the form of debates, discussions, and case studies. The curriculum is trimester-based, with two exams: one mid-term and one end-term. Assignments and group projects on relevant topics are given to students to be prepared. Separate marks are allotted for presentations and live projects. There are various cells that students can be a part of. This helps with bettering of one's communication and interaction capabilities, and creates a sense of belongingness among students. There are certification programs for interested students which can be done after or during the college hours. A lot of competitions such as writing, singing, performing, quizzes, sports, etc. are held. There is a good arrangement of library, lab, canteen, hostel facilities, and rest rooms. Girls’ and boys’ lounges are available as part of resources for extra-curricular activities and games. VBX Leadership Series end seminars are conducted by industry experts and professionals on a regular basis. Soft skills and foreign language course are also integrated with the program. Litrati fest, Basic 19, and Yuva for Seva are some of the highlights of the PGDM program. Intra and inter college fests are conducted and festivals are celebrated with great vigour among students. Students take part in organizing and managing various such events. This ensures participation, time management, team spirit and character building.
