IIT Delhi seeks clarity from Education Ministry for setting up overseas campus
In January this year, UGCΒ had allowed the Institutes of Eminence (IoEs) in India, such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc), to establish their campuses outside the country.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has sought clarity from the education ministry over setting up a campus outside India. As per the media reports, the institute has written to the ministry seeking clear directions on it.Β
As per the sources in IIT Delhi, " the premier technology institute is interested in opening a campus abroad but there have been no proper directions from the government so far."
βWe have written a letter to the ministry asking them for clear directions on how to proceed to set up an international campus. We are interested to know whether the government will step in to hold a government-to-government dialogue or if institute-to-institute collaboration is what is expected,β a source in IIT-Delhi told a media house.
In January this year, the University Grants Commission (UGC) had allowed the Institutes of Eminence (IoEs) in India, such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc), to establish their campuses outside the country. As per the new UGC (Institutions of Eminence Deemed to be Universities) (Amendments) Regulations 2021, UGC has amended its regulation for IoEs and included a clause that will allow offshore campuses for such institutions.Β
At present, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi government has declared 20 institutes β 10 private and 10 public, includingΒ IIT-Delhi,Β IIT-Bombay,Β IIT-Madras,Β IIT-Kharagpur,Β IIScΒ and theΒ University of Hyderabad, among others β as IoEs.
The institutes were allowed to start a maximum of three off-shore centres in five years, but not more than one in an academic year. The UGC, under the education ministry, is responsible for determining and maintaining the standard of higher education in India.
