Former IIMA Director Errol D'Souza joins GITAM University as Vice-Chancellor

Dr. Errol D'Souza's academic journey began at the University of Mumbai, where he earned his Master's in Economics and Statistics, followed by a Ph.D. from JNU, New Delhi.

GITAM (Deemed to Be) University has appointed Dr. Errol D'Souza as its new Vice-Chancellor. An economist and the former Director of IIM Ahmedabad, Dr. Errol D'Souza brings over three decades of unparalleled experience in shaping academic institutions and influencing policy, further enhancing GITAM’s stature as a leading force in higher education.

In particular, his commitment to the values of honesty and compassion—principles I deeply cherish—will be instrumental in leading us forward," said M. Sribharat, President of GITAM University.

Dr. Errol D'Souza's academic journey began at the University of Mumbai, where he earned his Master's in Economics and Statistics, followed by a Ph.D. from JNU, New Delhi. His global perspective has been shaped by roles at prestigious institutions worldwide, including Sciences Po Paris and the National University of Singapore.

Speaking about his new role, Dr. Errol D'Souza shared, "Education has the power to transform not just individuals but entire communities. What drew me to GITAM was its commitment to excellence and its deep roots in the community. I'm excited to work with our students and fellow faculty, to build on this foundation and create new possibilities for learning and discovery."

Dr. Errol D’Souza has also contributed to several academic committees, including the University Grants Commission and the Indian Council of Social Science Research. He has worked with the Planning Commission of India and the Reserve Bank of India. He currently serves on the Academic Council of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences and the Institute for Human Development, Delhi, and on the Advisory Board of the International Centre for Development and Decent Work, Kassel, Germany. He is also a Director of the National Housing Bank and a member of the Board of Governors of the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy.

An expert in macroeconomics, development finance, and public policy, Dr. Errol D’Souza is on the editorial boards of major journals, including the Journal of Quantitative Economics (Springer) and the Indian Journal of Labour Economics (Springer).
