What after MAT result

Once the MAT 2026 result is released, candidates can start assessing their options for the next step. Those who scored as expected can start planning MBA admission. The advantage of taking MAT is that they can select 5 colleges to which AIMA will send their score for admission. So, the pressure of selecting a college is not there for MAT qualifiers. So, immediately after MAT 2026 result announcement, what they need to do is start preparing for Personal Interview (PI) and Group Discussion (GD).

However, if a candidates is not satisfied with the MAT February 2026 score, then they can explore other options such as appearing for the MAT exam again in May or other MBA entrance exams. They can also consider taking up a job to gain work experience to improve their profile (many institutes give preference to candidates with work experience). Let’s explore these possibilities, one by one.

Prepare for MBA GD/PI

Since MAT exam has General Awareness section of 30 marks, there is a good chance you have a good knowledge of GK and current affairs. So, you needn’t worry on that aspect. Focus on Group Discussion (GD) because it is not how much you know, but how you present that knowledge which makes or breaks a GD performance. Similarly, in Personal Interview (PI) too, the interviewers judge your confidence and clarity of thoughts; both traits essential to be a good manager. So, practice public speaking. Some institutes also conduct Written Ability Test, so practice essay writing.

Some MBA colleges conduct the PI online whereas some conduct it offline. Here are some key tips for in person GD/PI.

  • Dress smartly and formally. do not were floral prints or bright colours.
  • Reach the venue on time and carry all the relevant documents
  • Speak in a polite manner and greet the interviewers/panelists before speaking
  • In GD, wait for your turn to speak. Do not interrupt when someone is speaking
  • Keep your pitch right. It should be neither too high nor too low.
  • Make eye contact while speaking.
  • Do not use data or words you can't explain.
  • Keep your answers/argument crisp and to the point.
  • If you don't know the answer say it. Don't make up answers.
  • Be confident of your academics and achievement.

Many candidates may feel nervous about virtual PI for various reasons. From the thought of not looking presentable to disruptive internet connection, many thoughts plague their mind but there is nothing to worry about. They just need to be well prepared with knowledge about their course field, interest and job profile (if any). Listed below are some of the aspects to keep in mind for virtual GD/PI.

  • Ensure the internet connectivity is strong and disruption free. Check the connectivity beforehand.
  • Be confident while talking. Be direct and to the point. Do not get distracted and keep the conversation limited to the topic.
  • Log on to your computer for GD/PI as scheduled. If you keep the interviewers waiting, it may leave a bad impression.
  • Place your laptop/desktop in a well-lit room. Sit facing the light so that your face is clearly visible in the camera.
  • Dress well and be well groomed. Comb your hair and wear formal or semi-formal clothes.

MAT College Selection

As mentioned earlier, MAT test takers have one advantage that they do not have to spend time on college selection, as it is done at the time of MAT 2026 application process. AIMA provides the option of selecting up to five participating institutes where a candidate would like to take admission. AIMA sends the scorecard of candidate to these five institutes who reach out to candidates for further admission process. However, if a candidate wishes to apply to MBA colleges other than those five, they must check out their application dates and apply by themselves.

MAT is overall an easy exam, but if you compare the sections, usually the Quantitative Aptitude is considered tougher than rest of the four sections, due to calculation intensive questions.

All the MAT sections have same weightage, i.e. 30 questions and 30 marks. So candidates must keep in mind to prepare each section properly and poor performance in one section can affect overall score.
