Yes, the University of Michigan is widely considered a like an Ivy League institution academically

Yes, it is very difficult to get into the University of Michigan as its acceptance rate is only around 15.64% for the class of 2028. And it generally stays in the same range

To get in, Indian students are required to meet the University of Michigan admission requirements, which are given below - 

  • Competitive academic credentials
  • English proficiency tests with good scores
  • Standardized test scores like SAT or ACT

As per the US News and World Report 2026, the University of Michigan is generally considered a top 20 to 50 institution and not top 10. In National terms, it is consistently placed among the top  20 and considered as one of the best public universities.

U of M does not have the traditional 'Ivy League' status but it provides students with a prestigious alumni network and great research output. Look at its rankings given below - 

  • National Universities: Ranked #20 by U.S. News & World Report.
  • Best Public Schools: Ranked #3 nationally by U.S. News.

In the Financial Times MBA rankings, the University of Michigan ranks at #34 in 2026. In the QS Global MBA rankings for 2026, UMich ranks at #22 in 2026. The university was placed at the same position in the previous year.
