What do you understand from a BEd Degree?

If you wish to become a teacher in either a government or private institute, then having a BEd as a minimum educational qualification is important in India. All the important teaching skills, like pedagogy, classroom management, and subject-specific teaching methodologies, are taught in the course.

In India, two types of BEd programs are considered.

  • Standalone BEd program (2 years)
  • Integrated BEd program (4 years)

Well, the standalone/2-year BEd program is pursued after graduation. Whereas the 4-year integrated program is pursued as part of graduation.

Important News: From 2026 onwards, you will also be able to apply for a 1-year BEd program in selected colleges.  There will be terms and conditions (we will notify you all once available) associated with it.

Why do we even need a 1-year BEd course in India?

Now, the question arises when we already have 2 existing types of BEd programs in India, then why would we need the 1-year BEd program? To answer this question of yours, this BEd program will be introduced for people who are already working(not unemployed like me;-)) and for the candidates who are actually facing valid problems.

  • The duration might have given you the idea that now the interested candidates will be able to finish a two-year course in just one year.
  • The fees might get halved since the duration also got half (keyword MIGHT).
  • If you’re a working professional who wants to switch to teaching or are already a teacher who wishes to upgrade their skills, then this 1-year BEd course in India is for you.
  • This reason is something I personally don’t agree with, but the experts say that it will help in meeting the growing demand for teachers in India. (But, give them the required time to understand what a teacher is and acquire the necessary skills).

Difference Between These Two Courses?

The table below will help you find the contrast between the two. You will be able to decide (hopefully).

Comparison Criteria 2-year BEd Course 1-year BEd course
Course Duration 2 years 1 year
Requirement to Take Admission graduation complete or pending result Post-graduated or any 4-year integrated course in education
Syllabus Comparison Detailed with practical experience Brief theory with maximum practice
Fees for both 20,000rupees  – 2,50,000 rupees Not Released Yet
Availability in many Indian colleges Will be available in selected colleges
Career Scope PGT, TGT, researcher, counsellor, and much more Fast entry in the same jobs

PS: In the case of 1 year in India, you’ll know the fee structure better after its implementation. In the initial phase, many institutions/ companies might prefer the candidate with a 2-year BEd.

There isn’t any official update by NCTE yet. So, we have guessed (that’s what we can do) the expected 1-year BEd course admission process.

Registration and Application form process: Admission to the 1-Year BEd Programme shall be through a subject and aptitude test conducted by the National Testing Agency (hereinafter referred to as ‘NTA’) and shall be standardized keeping in view the linguistic and cultural diversity of the country. A single nationwide entrance test will be conducted by NTA for admission to the BEd 1-Year Programme under the recommendations of NEP 2020.

What will be the Career Options after a 1-year BEd Course in India?

Private companies and institutions might have different job selection processes. But, it is said, after the completion of a 1-year BEd course, the candidates can apply as a:

  • Primary
  • 10+2 Teacher
  • Counsellor
  • School Administrator
  • Content Developer
  • Researcher

This 1-year BEd teaching program will mainly be implemented for individuals who are already working. It will help them in skills upgradation, promotions, and government eligibility tests.

Should the 1-year BEd Course be Implemented or Not?

Well, every coin has two sides. We can use both pros of cons to decide if implementing a 1-year BEd course in India is a good thing or not.

Positives

  • The course will be completed in a year only.
  • The fees (at least what we are expecting) will be lower.
  • The fast-tracked course for all the candidates with previous teaching experience.
  • They’re saying it will meet India’s growing demand for teachers faster.

Negatives

  • The condensed syllabus will provide only limited information as it will be prepared for a 1-year BEd course duration.
  • The practical experience duration for this course will be shorter.
  • The learning pace might be super-fast, especially for a slow learner like me. There is a chance you might not get an extensive learning experience.

Story time: From personal experience, my post-graduation course was reduced to 1.5 years instead of 2 years pandemic. The initial two semesters were covered in the duration meant for 1 semester, resulting in limited and fast-paced knowledge.

Conclusion: NCTE has already released the notice about the return of the 1-year BEd course in India from 2026 onwards. The course is designed mainly for already working individuals or teachers who already have experience. It gives them fast-track entry. We will keep you aware of the official admission process, dates, and fees. Let’s see if it meets our expectations. Don't believe any rumors until the official is released.
