1-year BEd course in India

NCTE (National Council for Teacher Education) declared that the 1 Year BEd Course in India will commence from 2026 onwards in the selected colleges. This change is introduced to speed up the process for the candidates who already have either a post-graduate or 4-year integrated degree (BA BEd, BScEd, or BElEd). Even if you have a three-year bachelor’s degree, even then, you will have to pursue the regular 2-year BEd degree.

Generally, there are two types of BEd degrees, standalone and integrated. A standalone degree is of 2 years, while an integrated BEd degree is 4 years. It is coupled with a BA or BSc degree. What do you understand from a BEd Degree?

If you wish to become a teacher in either a government or private institute, then having a BEd as a minimum educational qualification is important in India. All the important teaching skills, like pedagogy, classroom management, and subject-specific teaching methodologies, are taught in the course.

In India, two types of BEd programs are considered.

• Standalone BEd program (2 years)
• Integrated BEd program (4 years)

Well, the standalone/2-year BEd program is pursued after graduation. Whereas the 4-year integrated program is pursued as part of graduation.

Why do we even need a 1-year BEd course in India?

Now, the question arises when we already have 2 existing types of BEd programs in India, then why would we need the 1-year BEd program? To answer this question of yours, this BEd program will be introduced for people who are already working and for the candidates who are actually facing valid problems.

• The reintroduction of the one-year B.Ed. programme suggests that eligible candidates may now be able to complete the professional teaching qualification in a shorter duration compared to the existing two-year course. Since the course duration is reduced, there is also a possibility that the overall course fee may become comparatively lower, although the official fee structure has not yet been announced.
• The programme will benefit working professionals who wish to transition into the teaching profession, as well as in-service teachers looking to upgrade their qualifications and teaching skills through a faster academic pathway.
• The introduction of the one-year B.Ed. course may also help address the increasing demand for qualified teachers in India. What will be the Requirements for a 1-year BEd course in India (Expected)?

If we go by the National Council for Teacher Education, then the expected admission requirement for a 1-year BEd program in India will be.

• Candidates who have completed a Master’s Degree with at least 50% marks or an equivalent grade are eligible to apply for the programme. Also, candidates holding a 4-year undergraduate degree in a specialised subject with a minimum of 50% marks or equivalent grade are also eligible for admission.
• Relaxation in minimum qualifying marks and reservation benefits for candidates belonging to SC, ST, OBC, EWS, PwBD, and other reserved categories will be provided as per the rules and regulations of the Central Government, State Government, or Union Territory Administration applicable at the time of admission.
• Candidates with prior teaching experience or those currently working as in-service teachers may receive preference during the admission process.

• No upper age limit

Important: Three-year bachelor’s degree holders are not eligible for the 1-Year B.Ed course under current draft norms and should enroll in the regular 2-year B.Ed if they wish to pursue BEd.

1-year BEd Course in India: Course Intake

• The basic unit shall comprise a maximum of fifty students.
• The institution shall be permitted to opt for one or more stage-specific BEd 1-Year Programme (Foundational/ Preparatory/ Middle/ Secondary).
• The institution shall also be permitted to opt for one or more units, provided the institution is eligible for the same. A maximum of four units is allowed.

What might be the 1-year BEd course Admission Process (2026)?

As there is no official update from the NCTE yet, the following outlines the admission process for the one-year B.Ed. programme.

Registration and Application Process: Admission to the one-year programme is expected to involve a standardized entrance examination conducted by the NTA. The selection process will likely include the publication of merit lists, followed by counselling sessions and document verification.

Fee Payment and Admission Confirmation: Candidates must complete the fee payment process to confirm their admission. Without payment of the prescribed fees, colleges will not permit candidates to commence the one-year B.Ed. course in India.

Counselling: Will be the same as many exams, like RIE CEE or IPU CET

Exact fee details are not yet officially fixed by the NCTE; estimates in the range of INR 20,000–INR 80,000 per year in colleges (depending on government vs private and facilities) are indicative and may change once official regulations are released.

Reservation Policy in 1-year BEd Course in India

The reservation and relaxation for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD/EWS and other categories shall be as per the rules of the Central / State Government / UT Administration, whichever is applicable from time to time. 

• There is a relaxation of 5% marks in the qualifying 1-year BEd entrance examination. 
• Candidates with a minimum 40% disability are eligible for reservation.

• The condensed syllabus will provide only limited information as it will be prepared for a 1-year BEd course duration.
• The practical experience duration for this course will be shorter.
• The learning pace might be super-fast, especially for a slow learner like me. There is a chance you might not get an extensive learning experience.

Story time: From personal experience, my post-graduation course was reduced to 1.5 years instead of 2 years due to the pandemic. The initial two semesters were covered in the duration meant for 1 semester, resulting in limited and fast-paced knowledge.

The NCTE has officially announced the return of the one-year B.Ed. course in India from 2026 onwards.
