Good News for BEd Aspirants! NCTE To Resume 1-Year B.Ed, M.Ed Courses From 2026-27 Academic Session
In a major update, NCTE will start the 1-year B.Ed and M.Ed courses from the 2026-27 academic session aiming to provide a faster and more efficient launch pad for aspiring teachers who want to pursue the BEd or MEd course. Check details here.
In a major update from the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), the 1-year B.Ed and M.Ed courses are going to be resumed from the 2026-27 academic session. This comes after nearly a decade's discontinuation marking a significant reform in teacher education, aiming to provide a faster and more efficient launch pad for aspiring teachers who want to pursue the BEd or MEd course.
The 1-year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) and Master of Education (M.Ed.) programs were discontinued in 2014 when the NCTE extended the B.Ed course to two years as it wanted the teacher training curriculum course to be more comprehensive. This was done to ensure the course met global educational standards by focusing more on practical training, pedagogy, and research-based learning.
However, there were challenges with longer study durations, reduced enrollments, and increased financial burdens on the students especially after the introduction of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasized flexibility and outcome-based learning.
Eligibility Criteria for 1-Year BEd and MEd Course
To apply for the 1-year B.Ed course, students must hold a Masterβs degree in any discipline with a minimum of 50% marks along with prior teaching experience as it can increase their chances during admissions. For the 1-year M.Ed course, students will have to ensure a B.Ed degree with at least 55% marks along with research experience or in-service teaching experience to increase their chances during the selection process.
The reintroduction of 1-year B.Ed and M.Ed courses will bring more flexibility, accessibility, and efficiency to teacher training in India and will help aspiring educators enter the profession quicker, it will also address the teacher shortage scenario, and enhance career progression opportunities.
