Teacher Training Courses after 12th

There are many recognized teacher training programs that you can choose after completing class 12th. You can also start with a diploma or a certificate course. One can also choose a graduation teaching course for four years. The section below will cover the most important teacher training courses in detail.

Advice: Please go through the NCTE Draft Regulations to check the credibility.

4-year Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP)

The duration of the course (BA BEd/BSc BEd/BCom BEd with combined subject-major + pedagogy training) is four years, and to become eligible for this course, one has to pass the 12th board with a minimum of 50 percent aggregate marks in the Science stream. Doctorate in Education degree holders may get direct admission into the second academic year of this integrated program.

DElEd

DElEd or Diploma in Elementary Education is an elementary teacher training diploma certificate program. Students are trained to make them capable of taking up the role of an elementary school teacher. The duration of the course is two years. To become eligible for the course, one has to pass the 12th board in any stream with a minimum of 50 percent aggregate marks. This percentage varies from one institute to another.

BPEd

BPEd or Bachelor of Physical Education is also known as the BPE course. This is an undergraduate degree course that focuses only on Physical Education. The duration of the course is three years and to become eligible for the course, one has to pass the 12th board in any stream with a minimum of 50 percent aggregate marks. This percentage varies from one institute to another.

BEd

BEd or Bachelor of Education is a post-graduate course. All graduates can pursue the course after completion of their undergraduate bachelor’s degree courses. This degree is necessary for becoming a teacher at the secondary or higher secondary level. The BEd course can also be pursued after completion of the postgraduate course. The duration of the course is two years, and to become eligible for the course, one has to have either a BA or BSc, or BCom degree with a minimum of 50 percent aggregate marks. One needs to pass a BEd Entrance exam to enroll in this course.

NCTE has proposed multiple BEd pathways, including one-year, two-year, and integrated programmes. However, candidates should check the latest admission notification of the respective university before applying.

Pre & Primary Teachers’ Training

These courses help students or candidates who want to become future teachers learn the newest teaching methods. They also get better job chances in the teaching field. The course helps to understand child psychology deeply and teaches how to care for both the mental and physical well-being of children.

Montessori Teachers Training

All students aspiring to get into the Montessori teaching profession need to pursue a comprehensive Montessori teacher training course. The candidates are awarded a certificate on successful completion of the course. This would help them in finding Montessori teaching opportunities.

Ed. Management & Administration

Montessori teacher training prepares educators in Maria Montessori's child-centered philosophy, focusing on holistic development, self-directed learning, and specific materials for ages 0-6 (and beyond) through certificate, diploma, or PG diploma courses, available online or in-person. It blends theory (child psychology, pedagogy) with practical teaching (lesson planning, classroom management).

Assistant Professor Course

After completion of the Master's degree, one can easily appear for tests such as NET/SET/SLET and become an accomplished Assistant Professor.

Due to shifting norms, many older teacher-training courses (4-year BEd, old integrated courses) are being phased out or restructured. Before enrolling, always check that:

  • NCTE recognises the college/institute under the current regulations
  • The course is approved (e.g., ITEP, 1-yr/2-yr BEd, MEd)
  • The curriculum matches updated standards

A teacher’s salary can vary significantly depending on experience, qualifications, and the level of teaching. On average, teachers may earn annual salary packages ranging from INR 1.2 lakh to INR 6 lakh.

Some traditional teacher education programmes are gradually being restructured as institutions adopt the Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP). However, many universities continue to offer BEd, DElEd, MEd, and other recognised teacher education programmes.
