IGNOU Highlights 2026
Indira Gandhi National Open University (popularly known as IGNOU or Indira Gandhi Open University), established in 1985, is considered one of the prominent names for distance/ part-time education in India. IGNOU University began by offering two programmes in 1987, with a strength of approximately 4,500 students. Today, it serves more than 4 million students in India and abroad through its 21 schools, a network of 56 regional centres, and 29 overseas partner institutions. IGNOU Distance Education programmes are offered in Open and Distance Learning (ODL) & Online Learning (OL) modes. The university offers more than 200 programmes at certificate, diploma, degree and doctoral levels.
IGNOU courses include BSc, BCom, BBA, BCA, BA, MA, MCA, MBA, MCom and others. Indira Gandhi National University is the largest university in the world, run by the Central Government of India. It has also been accredited by the NAAC with Grade 'A++'. IGNOU has students from over 40 countries. At present IGNOU offers over 200+ UG, PG, diploma, certificate and doctoral courses via regular distance and Online Distance Learning (ODL) mode. The IGNOU admission cycles are conducted twice a year, in January and July. The Ministry of Education and Social Welfare, in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the UGC, and the Indian National Commission for Cooperation, organised a seminar on ‘Open University’ with UNESCO. Upon the recommendation of the seminar, the Government of India decided to establish an open university on an experimental basis. In 1974, an eight-member working group was formed, headed by G Parthasarathy, the then Vice-Chancellor of JNU, to monitor the establishment of the open university. Under the Working Group Report 1974, the recommendation to establish a national open university by an act of Parliament was proposed. Most IGNOU Indira Gandhi National Open University courses 2026 are imparted through online and distance learning modes. This year, IGNOU University has launched a few new courses, namely the PG Diploma in Sustainability Science and the PG Diploma in Digital Media, among others. Certain programmes are not allowed under the simultaneous registration. Students are advised to visit

IGNOU Admission Process and Important Dates 2026
IGNOU admission process takes place twice a year, in January and July. Admissions for the IGNOU Jan session 2025 are currently ongoing at www ignou ac in. The majority of the criteria used to determine admissions at Indira Gandhi Open University Delhi are the candidates' final scores in the qualifying degrees. However, for a few courses, such as B.Ed, Post-Basic BSc Nursing, MPhil, and PhD, the university conducts/ accepts the entrance exams. The notification regarding campus placement drives is uploaded online in the placement section of the official website. The open university conducted a placements drive in february. Students got jon opportunities through this drive. As per data curated from some unofficial sources, the overall the highest package offered to the IGNOU students stood at INR 15 LPA. IGNOU Scholarships 2026
IGNOU scholarships 2025 are offered to students belonging to reserved categories (SC/ST). The university also provides exemption/ reimbursement facilities time to time as per the rules of the university. Candidates can also apply for government scholarships. Students are also advised to collect the scholarship forms from the Directorate of Social Welfare or the office of the Social Welfare Officer of their State, fill them up and submit them to the Regional Director at the Regional Centre. The scholarship scheme of the National Centre for Promotion of Employment of Disabled People (NCPEDP) for PG programmes is also applicable to this university's students. Indira Gandhi National Open University admit candidates to its MA courses on a merit basis. The applications are shortlisted based on aggregate in the last qualifying exam, i.e., the bachelor's degree course. The Indira Gandhi National University evaluates the candidates based on their performance in the term end examinations, assignments, projects/ practicals. IGNOU assignments carry up to 30% weightage in the final exams. Students must submit the assignments before the IGNOU assignment last date as notified by the university, to be eligible for the IGNOU term end examinations. Students can download assignments from the IGNOU official website (ignou ac in assignment). Students must include important information such as course name, course code, enrollment number, etc. on the first page of IGNOU assignment.
Candidates can follow the steps given below to submit the IGNOU assignment:
- Submit IGNOU TEE assignments to the respective study centre or regional centre as per the instructions given by the regional centre.
