Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University (MJPRU) was established in 1975 as Rohilkhand University. It was renamed in 1997 to honor the social reformer Mahatma Jyotiba Phule. It got the status of a residential university in 1985, when four more departments were increased. The university is recognised by the UGC and accredited with a "B" Grade by the NAAC. The university has a campus of 206 acres in Bareilly. MJPRU is affiliated with 215 colleges.  The university has been ranked 34 under the Overall by the India Today 2024.

The university accepts national entrance exams such as CUET UG, CUET PG, JEE Main, etc., are also accepted by the university. The university admission process begins with an online application.
