Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith was established in 1921. It has three campuses, that is, Gangapur campus, NTPC campus and Bhairav Talab campus. Besides these campuses, the university also has 10 faculties, four institutes and more than 30 departments in its campus at Varanasi. It further possesses a total of over 350 affiliated colleges in six districts, i.e. Varanasi, Chandauli, Bhadohi, Mirzapur, Sonbhadra and Ballia.
