MGU Kottayam: The Pros and Cons.

Placements: Our department offers no placement opportunities and is still under consideration. Students are applying for the GIS & RS course within the department itself, which has high placement probabilities. The students who have graduated from the DM course are mostly doing internships and projects. The lack of placement options is a major problem for the students.

Infrastructure: The department's infrastructure is excellent and is one of the best in India regarding lab equipment. It has a vast collection of sophisticated laboratory tools. The library consists of more than 5,000 books, and the university library is also a major plus point for this campus. The newly modified library is top-notch. All classrooms are smart classrooms, and Wi-Fi is available in all areas of the university 24/7. As for the hostel, the facilities are satisfactory, but the mess food is not as tasty as expected. The food is nutritious and provided in good quantity but lacks flavor. There are two canteens and several tea shops inside the university. The department of physical education offers different courses, with football being the major sport observed on campus.

Faculty: The teachers in our department are qualified, helpful, and friendly. However, since this is a university department, they are not mostly available for teaching. The teaching methods may also require improvement. The curriculum of the course is mostly theory-based, except for the lab experiments, which is not enough for real-world applications. Exams are generally moderately difficult, and almost all students are expected to pass.

Other: I chose this course because I wanted to learn about the environment. Even though environmental science and disaster management are highly relevant areas, they are often underappreciated. The frequent impact of climate change and disasters is an everyday story, yet there are no permanent job postings at the government level. Mahatma Gandhi University has secured the 4th rank in India and recently achieved an A+ grade in the NAAC ranking. Major events on campus include the Arts Fest, Campus Carnival, department days, conferences, film festivals, and hostel day. Recently, cycles were introduced to the campus to reduce pollution and improve student mobility. The major attraction is nature, as the campus comprises almost half its area with trees.
