The subject of economics examines how people make choices when faced with shortage. A person, a family, a company, or a society may make these choices. It's evident if you pay close attention to your surroundings that scarcity exists. When there is a shortage, it indicates that demand for products, services, and resources outpace supply. Although they are few, resources like labour, equipment, land, and raw materials are essential to producing the products and services we want. Naturally, time is the most valuable resource of all as everyone, regardless of wealth, only gets 24 hours a day to attempt to obtain their desired items. There are only a limited number of resources accessible at any one moment.

The US labor force is a significant resource, with over 158.6 million workers and a total area of 3,794,101 square miles. However, these resources are limited, limiting the production of goods and services. This scarcity is a problem due to the infinite human wants. For example, everyone needs food, a decent place to live, and access to healthcare. In every country, people are hungry, homeless, and in need of these essential goods and services. Scarcity is a crucial concept in understanding economics, as it affects the availability of essential goods and services.

The problem of scarcity is a significant issue in society, as people often lack the knowledge to produce all the things they want. Adam Smith's 1776 book, The Wealth of Nations, introduced the division and specialization of labor, which divides production into different tasks performed by different workers. This division allows individuals to produce more than they currently know, such as building homes, growing crops, hunting for food, and repairing equipment. Studying economics teaches us to think differently and recognize that the obvious choice is not always the best or complete answer.

Q:   Is MBA available at GSFC University?

The division and specialization of labor in production allows workers and businesses to produce a greater quantity of output. This is due to three reasons: specialization allows workers to focus on areas with an advantage, produce more quickly and with higher quality, and take advantage of economies of scale. Specialization only makes sense if workers can use the pay they receive for doing their jobs to purchase other goods and services they need. This is how modern society has evolved into a strong economy.

Why Study Economics?

Now that we have gotten an overview on what economics studies, let’s quickly discuss why you are right to study it. Economics is not primarily a collection of facts to be memorized, though there are plenty of important concepts to be learned. Instead, economics is better thought of as a collection of questions to be answered or puzzles to be worked out. Most important, economics provides the tools to work out those puzzles. If you have yet to be been bitten by the economics “bug,” there are other reasons why you should study economics.

  • Economics is not just memorizing facts, but a toolbox for understanding and solving problems.
  • Most of the world's major issues, from climate change to poverty and conflict, have an economic angle.
  • Studying economics equips you to be a well-informed citizen who can analyze budgets and policies.
  • Understanding economics helps you decipher news articles and arguments related to the economy.
  • You'll be able to distinguish between sound economic reasoning and misleading information.
  • Economics provides a new lens for analyzing current events, personal choices, and business decisions.
  • Studying economics doesn't tell you what the answer is, but helps you see different options.
  • Economics is a crucial tool for anyone who wants to be part of solving the world's problems.
  • A basic understanding of economics makes you a well-formed thinker.
  • Economics is essential for informed voting on issues that affect your life

Key Concepts and Summary

Economics seeks to solve the problem of scarcity, which is when human wants for goods and services exceed the available supply. A modern economy displays a division of labor, in which people earn income by specializing in what they produce and then use that income to purchase the products they need or want. The division of labor allows individuals and firms to specialize and to produce more for several reasons: a) It allows the agents to focus on areas of advantage due to natural factors and skill levels; b) It encourages the agents to learn and invent; c) It allows agents to take advantage of economies of scale. Division and specialization of labor only work when individuals can purchase what they do not produce in markets. Learning about economics helps you understand the major problems facing the world today prepares you to be a good citizen, and helps you become a well-rounded thinker.
