Students who will appear for JEE Main 2022 can read the article below to calculate approximate JEE Main 2022 rank through percentile score.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced the result of JEE Main in the form of a percentile score. The All India Rank of candidates in JEE Main 2022 will be calculated by taking the best score out of four attempts. Shiksha received numerous queries from candidates who appear for JEE Main. Two of the most commonly asked questions are:
  • How to calculate JEE Main rank from percentile
  • Can JEE Main rank be calculated from percentile score?

While some experts believe that candidates cannot calculate JEE Main Rank from the percentile score of just one examination, others believe the opposite. Let’s discuss both cases in this article.

Latest Update: JEE Main 2022 result for the session 2 exam is likely to release by August 7. The direct link to check JEE Main 2022 result will be available here.

How to calculate JEE Main 2022 rank from percentile?

Candidates can analyse their NTA scores and calculate their approximate JEE Main rank through their percentile scores. Here’s how.

Take the total number of candidates who appeared for the JEE Main exam as "N". The exam is conducted in four days in two slots (4 days x 2 slots = 8 sessions in total). So, "S" number of students took the exam in each session. Note that the JEE Main results/scorecard mentions only the NTA score for each subject and not the subject-wise marks secured by candidates. The percentile score is displayed against each of the subjects and the overall percentile score is calculated up to 7 decimals using a pre-determined formula.

For more information on how JEE Main 2022 Percentile score is calculated, read this article on How to calculate JEE Main 2021 Percentile Score - Know Normalization Process

So, to convert your JEE Main Percentile into a Rank, you need the following figures:

  1. Your NTA score
  2. Total number of students who have appeared for the exam
  3. Percentage of students below or equal to your marks
  4. Percentage of students above your marks
  5. Number of students above your marks

While the data for the first two aspects are easily available, the figures for the other three data points are difficult to find. To calculate these, here's what you need to do.

Let’s assume:

Your NTA score =

P

Total Number of Students =

N

Percentage of students below or equal to your marks =

P

For example: if you have secured a 70 percentile in JEE Main, which means that 70% of the candidates who appeared for JEE Main are below or at the same level as you are

Percentage of students above your marks =

100 - P

Number of students above your marks

((100 – P)/100)*N

Now, the formula to calculate JEE Main Rank from Percentile Score is:

((100 – P)/100)*N + 1

The rank generated will be the probable All India Rank (AIR) you can expect to secure in JEE Main. The actual rank might differ owing to different factors.

Can JEE Main rank be calculated from percentile score?

According to an IIT Bombay expert, it’s difficult to derive an AIR through one’s percentile score. To help you understand why you cannot calculate JEE Main rank from percentile scores of the first attempt of the exam, let’s take an example of two students.

Student

Percentile Score – January

Percentile Score – April

AIR (All India Rank)

A

96 percentile

65 percentile

?

B

60 percentile

98 percentile

?

Student A has secured 96 percentile in JEE Main January exam, while Student B got 60 percentile in the same session of the examination. Now, the same set of students has secured 65 percentile and 98 percentile respectively in JEE Main.

Now, the general thought process of candidates after seeing the percentile score of the January attempt would be that Student A has performed better than Student B in JEE Main. But, that’s not the case. Because, in the second attempt of the exam, Student B secured a better percentile than Student A. And as per NTA, JEE Main ranks or rank list will be published after taking into account the better of the two four NTA scores of all candidates who have appeared for JEE Main February, March, July and August sessions. Furthermore, to determine JEE Main results and rank list, the agency will adopt the process of normalization which will be based on percentile calculation. Thus, deriving one’s rank from the percentile score of the first attempt is not possible as the exam is being conducted twice.

Important note:

  • The percentile is not the same as a percentage.
  • JEE Main merit list will be prepared on the basis of percentile scores and not on the raw marks secured by aspirants in the exam.

FAQs regarding JEE Main Percentile and Ranks

Q. Is percentile equal to a percentage?

A. No, percentile and percentage are totally different from each other. The percentile rank of a score is the percentage of scores in its frequency distribution that are equal to or lower than it.

Q. What is percentile vs percentage?

A. The percentile is relative to the score that other people made on the test, while the percentage is your individual score. Percentile is used when scoring standardized tests and is used in statistics.

Q. What is the percentile in JEE Main?

A. JEE Main percentile score will be the normalised score for the exam and not the raw marks of the test taker.

Q. Is 100 percentile possible?

A. If the "percentage below or equal to" definition is used, then, yes, we can have 100 percentile. However, if we use the "percentage below" definition, then, no, you cannot have a 100 percentile.

Q. Can I get nit with 94 percentile?

A. According to your percentile, your approximate rank is 66,000. If you have a home state quota, then you will definitely get an NIT.

Q. Is 97 percentile good in JEE mains?

Q. Can I get nit with 70 percentile?

A. No, there is no chance to get admission to any NITs with a 70 percentile for the general category. For the general candidates, at least 97 percentile is required to get a seat in NITs. You can try to get admission to other good engineering colleges.

Q. Can I get nit with 90 percentile OBC?

A. You have very low chances of getting admission in any of the NITs based on your JEE Main percentile score and category rank. Try for admission in private colleges through state counselling.

Q. What percentile is required for IIIT?

A. Every year cut off score for IIIT Hyderabad's last closing branch is around 250-260 or 99 percentile, which means a rank of around 1000 will be required for admission.

Q. Is IIIT better than nit?

A. It depends on which IIIT/NIT you are getting according to your rank. In terms of placement, faculties and infrastructure some IIITs are far better than many NITs.

Okay. Ranking in JEE Mains depends on the percentile that one secures in the examination. In addition National testing agency selects best out of the two performances of a student to determine his or her percentile. This is calculated up to the 7th decimal place. Once both the sessions of examinations are over NTA will declare the results of JEE Mains and devil also announce simultaneously the percentile and the ranking which students have obtained in this examination. No one else can determine the percentile since the data required is available only and only with NTA. Suggest that have a patience of few days and you will come to know from the official website of this agency about your results. Best wishes to you.
