Program Director Nishi Mishra of the Jindal School of Liberal Arts and Humanities speaks in-depth about the origins of the institution in an interview with Shiksha.com. Q: What makes Jindal School of Liberal Arts and humanities stand out from other institutes
A: The 10 majors offered at Jindal School of Liberal Arts and Humanities along with the opportunity to do a self-designed major alongside doing expressive arts makes the programme unique in every sense. The self-designed major enables the student to create their own major if they have two or more subjects in their mind to pursue and they don’t wish to leave anyone of them.
Jindal School of Liberal Arts and Humanities is at the centre of its vibrant intellectual life. The life of a student at JSLH is brisk and busy, but not hectic. From the first morning class till the last evening one, it is buzzing and vibrant. Everyday at JSLH is mostly devoted to the rigour of classroom learning and engagement, exemplified by heated, but healthy discussions. During breaks, candidates take a quick trip to the library to borrow reading material, grab a cup of coffee on-the-go and then get ready for another round of classroom discussion.
Q: About the inception of Jindal School of Liberal Arts and Humanities, various courses/specialisations offered
A: The school started in the year 2013 with a specialised degree in the BA (Hons). Liberal Arts & Humanities programme and a dual degree opportunity with Rollin’s College, US and Deakin University, Australia.
Q: Please talk in brief about your Teaching methodology
A: The school believes in the ideology of Learning by doing and that is why the Jindal School of Liberal Arts and Humanities classrooms are interactive and based on case studies. Jindal School of Liberal Arts and Humanities classrooms are relatively smaller as compared to any other class. We have only 30 students in a classroom for better interactive studies, peer learning. The students go for food walk,Old Delhi, Dharmsala and Buddhist Monastery at Varanasi.
Q: What is the admission process? How does the format make sure that the right students get selected/shortlisted?
A: The admissions process at Jindal School of Liberal Arts and Humanities is a holistic process where equal weightage is given academics and extra co-curricular activities. The student goes through a four-fold process where first they complete the application, go through interaction with the admissions head (Application scrutiny round), Faculty Interview and EE (JSAT if Sat or ACT is not given by the student)
Q: Apart from academics what other aspects of a student are checked while selection.
A: Apart from academics we look at the participation in the extra co-curricular activities of the candidate. We just not rely on academic performance but also on the skill development of the student, internships or any other certification course done by the student.
Q: What are some initiatives being taken/planned by you school to make its student’s industry ready?
A: The student while being in the programme goes through 4 mandatory internships which helps them attain the skills required for the Industry not only that but they can also apply to Universities abroad for Summer and Winter School, Elective exchange programme and immersion programmes. This dissertation project in the third year helps the student with applied major knowledge which makes them industry ready.
Q: As a School, How does Jindal School of Liberal Arts and Humanities (JSLH) ensure that students gets extra exposure apart from academics?
A: Foreign language engagement, industry projects, dual degree programme, creative study classes, and immersion programmes abroad all these initiatives apart from the regular classes.
