What motivates you to study hard? Every student has a different reason for opening their books and putting in hours of study, but what drives them the most? A recent poll conducted for class 10 and 12 students by Shiksha.com reveals some eye-opening insights into students' motivations. In the poll, we asked, "What motivates you to study hard?" and nearly half (49%) of the respondents said that getting good marks is the main reason for their motivation. Other reasons were aiming for a bright future, enjoying the study, Parental pressure, and I do not really study hard. Lets explore what these responses tell us about the student mindset today.

Getting good marks is the top motivation to study hard

For most students, academic performance is a major concern. Scoring well in exams is often considered a direct path to better opportunities. Students think that only hard study can help them get admission to reputed colleges, scholarships, and social validation. The fact that 49% of students chose this as their main motivator shows how deeply marks are tied to their sense of success and progress. Good marks not only bring a sense of achievement but are also often celebrated by parents, teachers, and peers, making them a strong driving force.

Aiming for a bright future is the motive to study hard for 24% students

A total of 24% of students think that a bright career motivates them to study. These candidates focus more on long-term goals such as a dream job, becoming financially independent, and more.

9% of students study for the joy of learning

Interestingly, 9% of the students feel that they study hard because they like studying. This group most likely finds genuine interest in subjects, problem-solving, reading, and learning new things. By nature, these students are curious and find motivation within themselves instead of any external rewards. Though a smaller percentage, they represent a healthy attitude toward learning that educators often try to instill. Just 6% of students feel that parental pressure is what compels them to study hard

Only 6% of students think parental pressure is the reason to study hard

Only 6% students said they are motivated by 'pressure from parents'. However, the percentage of this category is low. This category students are influenced/pressured by their families. Students from this category have a sense of responsibility to meet the expectations of their parents. 

12% of students are not really studying hard

12% of the respondents claimed that they do not really study hard. This could be because of a number of reasons: lack of interest, distractions, stress of academics, or confusion over goals. Here, too, it points to the need for motivating them on a personal level and counseling with a view to making their re-engagement with learning meaningful. The Shiksha.com poll underlines what encourages students to study. While most would like to score good marks, many are honed by future goals or love for learning. A few do study because of compulsion and lack of motivation.
