Mystory@Ramesh K Meda: College did not prepare me for my job

In one word (may be three) – “It didn't help". Let’s look at it this way, 85% of my career was spent using my soft skills (which college did not prepare me for) and the remaining 15% of my career was spent using my technical skills (which my education did not prepare me for). So what did help? It was my individuality and unapologetic way of accepting me as I am and seeing possibilities with all my strengths and weakness. Each strength is a weakness and vice-versa. I always looked at the world differently from others. Every problem was an opportunity and every suffering was a possibility to improve our standpoint.

Hunger is the most important component of anybody's career. Hunger to learn, earn and contribute. This sums up my career evolution. For some reason, hunger to learn and contribute weakened my hunger to earn. So, I looked for opportunities in smaller organisations as compared to larger ones. I believe one gets exposed to a wide variety of skills in smaller organisation and demand for excellence is the need of the hour and that too on daily basis in such firms.

Later, I started working with big companies such as EY, KPMG, Liz Claiborne, TIAA CREF and thus, my "hunger to earn" was also catered to. So, my career evolution was that I developed my skills first and then cashed in on these skills later.
