A Mediocre College in DU, But More Valuable Than Money-Hungry Private Institutions
Placements: I am graduating from Lakshmibai College in 2026 and I have been looking into the placement situation for Economics and English majors. The placement cell organizes job fairs and workshops where companies like Wipro and Tata Power come to recruit. We can start applying for jobs after our fourth semester. In terms of packages the average salary for placed students is around INR 3.5 lakhs per year with some companies offering up to 12 lakhs. Placement rates can vary a lot; typically about 30 to 60 percent of students land jobs but many choose to go for higher studies instead. Overall the opportunities are decent though they might not be as strong for English and Economics compared to other courses.
Infrastructure: The campus of our college isn't as large as those in the North Campus cluster but it's cozy and cute. However there are some issues with the washrooms. Half the time they are dirty and the washrooms on the second and third floors of Vikramshila (the new building) are kept closed. Additionally water is unavailable in many of the washrooms in the main building. Some classrooms in the main building are too cramped and congested, which makes them humid and prone to mold, resulting in unpleasant odors that are also unhealthy. On a positive note, the food in the canteen has improved a lot this year compared to last year. Unfortunately the Wi Fi doesn't work most of the time. The library and reading rooms are decent, but I think they should install air conditioning there.
Faculty: At Lakshmibai College the BA in English and Economics is all about getting a solid mix of theory and practical knowledge. The faculty is pretty impressive with a bunch of professors holding PhDs and having a ton of experience so you know you are in good hands. They make learning engaging, and there are often guest speakers from the industry who share their insights especially in the Economics department. The curriculum covers a wide range of topics giving you a strong foundation in both subjects. In the Economics department, they host events like debates and quizzes, which makes things fun and interactive. There's even a dedicated society, Eparcus, that organizes activities and keeps students in the loop about the latest economic trends. As for exams, the assessment style includes continuous evaluations and semester-end tests. This means you will get a chance to show what you have learned regularly, instead of just cramming for finals at the end of the semester.
Other: I'm graduating in 2026 in English and Economics, with English as my major. I chose this course because I love literature and wanted to add an intellectual element like economics. One of the best things about being an English major is the level of engagement you have with your teachers; they really consider your viewpoints on various topics. If I could suggest improvements for the course, it would be to change how Continuous Assessment (CA) and Internal Assessment (IA) marks are awarded. Instead of the usual assignments, tests, or presentations, I love to see more fun activities, like trips to literature-related museums where we could write about our experiences, or opportunities to attend subject-related seminars and events off-campus.
