Q:   What are the fees for MDes programmes at Manipal School of Arch & Planning?
A:

The M.Des programme at Manipal School of Architecture and Planning offers various specializations with differing annual fees. For sustainable design, the yearly fee stands at Rs3,26,000, while interior design costs Rs2,40,000 per year. Pursuing an M.Arch incurs a yearly fee of Rs3,78,000, and for an MA, it's Rs2,00,000 annually. Considering the program's duration of two years, the total tuition fees range from Rs2,00,000 to Rs3,96,000, showcasing the variability across specializations. This difference could stem from the diverse curriculum requirements or additional resources specific to each field. Beyond the academic investment, students might weigh the potential return through the average package offered post-graduation, which stands at Rs11.7 lakhs.

This average package serves as a financial benchmark, influencing students' decisions by indicating the potential economic benefits upon programme completion. Factors impacting the variation in fees could include the program's structure, faculty expertise, resources allocated to each specialization, and industry demand for graduates from different streams. Understanding these elements aids students in making informed decisions aligned with their career aspirations and financial considerations.

Overall, the tuition fees for the M.Des. programme at Manipal School of Architecture and Planning exhibit a range that accommodates diverse financial capacities. Balanced against this, the enticing average package reflects the program's potential to offer a rewarding return on investment, encouraging aspiring students to explore their passion within the design and architecture realms.

Q:   Is Manipal School of Architecture and Planning as good as NITTE Institute of Architecture?
A:

Both Manipal School of Architecture and Planning (MSAP) and NITTE Institute of Architecture (NIA) are well-respected institutions with strong reputations in the field of architecture. However, there are some key differences between the two schools that may influence your decision. Here are some of the factors that you can compare:

  • Establishment: MSAP was established in 1978 as a constituent of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), while NIA was founded in 2015 as a part of Nitte (Deemed to be University).
  • Ranking: MSAP is ranked 2nd among the top private architecture colleges in India by IIRF-2023, 3rd by Outlook-ICARE in 2022, and 18th by NIRF in 2021. NIA does not have any official ranking as of now, but it has been recognised by UGC, AICTE, CoA, and ITPI.
  • Curriculum: MSAP offers courses in architecture, urban design, interior design, fashion design and management, and sustainable design at undergraduate and post-graduate level. NIA offers only a Bachelor of architecture course as of now.
  • Facilities: MSAP has a spacious and green campus with facilities for design thinking and cultural activities. The campus is equipped with studios, workshops, labs, libraries, auditoriums, and cafeterias. NIA also has a modern campus with state-of-the-art infrastructure and amenities. The campus has a design studio, a digital fabrication lab, a material library, a seminar hall, and a cafeteria.
  • Placements: MSAP has a strong placement record with reputed firms and organizations in the field of design and architecture. The placement cell of MSAP provides career guidance, counseling, and assistance to the students. NIA does not have any information about its placement record on its website, but it claims to have a strong industry interface and exposure for the students.

To sum up, both MSAP and NIA are good options for pursuing a career in architecture, but they have their own strengths and weaknesses. You should consider your personal interests, aptitude, goals, and financial situation before making a final choice. You can visit the official websites of both the colleges to learn more about their admission process, fee structure, courses offered, and other details.

Manipal - The student town.
Placements: My course is bachelors as well as masters, and good firms send in applications for placements. Student experience during their internship, and mostly get placed depending on their CGPA. Mostly firms are from Bangalore, Hyderabad, and other cities too.
Infrastructure: We have our own campus designed in a way that considers student and staff. College has an amazing view. There is a lot of open space within campus. Even classes are well designed, keeping in mind sustainability. We do have labs, Wi-Fi, and printing area for our preparations as well as allotted classes course-wise. Library is also there. We do have canteen and faculty lounge for girls on our campus.
Faculty: We have good and qualified professors in college for all the courses. We have practical exams starting from 6 hours then as semester passes be it's increased to 18 hours. There are other theory written papers that also carry credit in order to pass the semester.
Other: It's interesting, and it's a creative field. We do have events every semester for a week, and the student body is majorly involved in preparations and faculty support too. We do have inter-college events and competitions held throughout.

Good infrastructure, no AC classrooms and some great faculty members every semester.
Placements: I'm not sure about the recruiting as a second-year student. They do mention a lot of placements and internship chances on their website and in their marketing campaigns. But I am not quite sure about this. As a first-year student, they had asked us to go for a summer internship of our choice and submit the necessary documents afterwards to prove the same.
Infrastructure: The infrastructure is, in fact, great but it takes a lot of time to adhere to the path and accesses. The feeling intends to get higher every year. However, there is no AC facility in any of the classrooms except for the CAD labs. It is hard to survive during the summer.
Faculty: The majority faculty members are excellently hire with great communication skills and fair mindedness. The end semester exams are of a total 12 hours drawing/ drafting, 2 day viva and 2 day of theory written exam. The curriculum is great except for some of the faculty are not given beforehand information on what has already been taught and looked at.

Our college has good faculty members, average infrastructure, and excellent crowd and campus life.
Placements: Almost 70% of students are placed in this course. The highest salary package offered is 4 LPA and the lowest salary package offered is 2 LPA. Top recruiting companies like L&T, Studio Mumbai, Sanjay Puri Architects, Studio Lotus, etc., visit our campus. Almost 70% of students got internships. Internships completely depend on your personal skills.
Infrastructure: The infrastructure is not up to the mark. Air-conditioners are not available in classrooms and drafting tables are very old. The hostel is good and well-furnished. Both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned rooms are available. Hot water and internet are available. Mess food is also very good. Both north Indian and south Indian food are available. Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food are available. There are midnight canteens available in every hostel which are open till midnight.
Faculty: Faculty members are worth the fee you have paid. Most of them are IIT graduates or from other highly designated universities. This course curriculum is relevant. It makes students industry-ready. Semester exams are not so tough. If you are completely prepared, you can easily score above 75%. The pass percentage is 50%.

Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) - Batch of 2022

3Placements5Infrastructure3Faculty5Crowd & Campus Life2Value for Money
College life at this college is very good.
Placements: The architecture course doesn't have any placements, so you must search for placements on your own. The training and placement cell might help. Batchmates got placed in various firms all over the country. Depending on performance, few students who joined as interns continued as junior architects.
Infrastructure: We share the same hostels with multiple colleges on the MIT campus, but all hostels are well-constructed. They are lively, and there are several student centres. The college is currently a part of the engineering department's building, but it will be soon shifted to its dedicated building.
Faculty: The syllabus of 2014 is different from what is followed currently. Students are not that industry-ready, but it is not necessarily specific to MSAP. Most of the teachers are helpful.
Other: We have only one fest named Opus and a sports event named Seige. More importance is given to academics here.

Our college provides good faculty members and infrastructure.
Placements: Since it's an architecture college, students usually opt to work under other firms. But in Manipal School of Architecture and Planning, you get a good experience and also with great faculty members and seniors. It makes it easier. Most of the alumni have their firms in large cities while others work for big firms.
Infrastructure: The infrastructure of the college is very good. They are going to shift to another building after a few years. Hostels are very spacious and have all the facilities required, and hygienic food is served in the mess. The campus also has some public gathering places to enjoy nature.
Faculty: The course curriculum is as prescribed by the council of architecture. Faculty members are well experienced and have good knowledge about the work. Most of the faculty members are holding PhDs in their respective subjects and are highly knowledgeable. They have a vast idea about most of the topics.
Other: I chose this course because of my interest in planning.

You have the key, do whatever you want with that.
Placements: There are no placements opportunities provided by the institution for architecture. However, students from our college have never failed to get into a good practice after college or during the course of the 1-year internship. Manipalites have a better chance of getting placed in practice in Bangalore due to its proximity to the college. There are students who try hard to get into cities like Mumbai or Ahmedabad, but the practices in these cities always give first preference to the students studying in the same city. But, this doesn't stop students from getting into top firms of India as there are alumni who are working for Pritzker award winner B V Doshi and highly famed architect Hafeez Contractor.
Infrastructure: Classrooms are 10m x 10m in size with a height of up to 7m. These working studios are large enough to offer convenient working spaces for every individual. Apart from that, there are AC seminar halls, jury halls and material laboratories. The architecture department is spacious enough to cater to every student's experimentation, and there are no restrictions as such. The whole building is a canvas to students.
Faculty: At the current stage of our college, there are many inexperienced faculty members and few experienced ones. Most of the experienced ones are pretty lazy and try to take up the shortest path method as many times as possible. The junior faculty are full of enthusiasm, but they lack the knowledge to cater to the current world of architecture. To make up with this, the institution (after plenty of experimentation with students, classes and curriculum) has a completely developed curriculum where learning happens at an enormous and zealous way as compared to our time.
Other: There is one fest conducted in every semester. One is a college fest by the title 'Opus', where architecture workshops are organised, and students take part in various interactive competitions ranging from essay writing to potpourri. The second fest 'Utsav', which is the university one, where all the institutions of Manipal compete against each other. Apart from that, there are sports competitions organised around the year.
