NIELIT was established in 1978 as Regional Computer Centre (RCC) to offer professional services in the areas of Information, Electronics and Communication Technology (IECT). The centre has a total of 8 classrooms with a total capacity of 30 students each. There is also one smart classroom available in the centre. NIELIT is the autonomous body of the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY), Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCoIT), Government of India. The centre is also ISO-certified.

The National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology and IIT Ropar have announced a joint certification in IoT (Industrial Training Programme in Internet of Things).
