What I learned from my mistakes: Uday Shankar Singh
What I feel is that when students are in the 10th standard, they should decide in which field they want to pursue their career. Many students are unable to do so and because of this, they take the wrong step, which afterwards lead them to the worst circumstances. Now, I chose Science (Maths) after my 10th standard. There is also a reason for choosing Maths. In my family, everyone from my great-grandfather to my cousins are engineers. So, because of it, my career pitch was already prepared. Apart from this, I also had an interest in computers. In the year 2014, I appeared for my Class XII board exams. Like other candidates, I also filled up different forms for Engineering entrance exams i.e. IIT-JEE (JEE Main), WBJEE, MU-OET, BITSAT and IPU CET.
How I cracked college admission
I still remember that day, which was my first attempt at JEE Main test. I was quiet excited for the exam. I got the question paper. During the first mandatory 15 minutes provided to study questions, I found questions easy and decided to attempt the Physics section first. The questions were in sections as 1- Chemistry 2- Physics and 3- Maths. Just like this, the OMR sheet, too, followed the same sequence. The blunder I did in my very first Engineering entrance exam was, Physics questions were in the second part and I started filling the OMR sheet’s first part which was of Chemistry. Also, I didn’t even see what I was doing. After Physics, I did Maths and the same cycle went on as I filled up Maths answers in Physics section. At last, I started doing Chemistry when I realised what I had done. I cried in the examination hall, but nothing could be done about it and I knew that I was not going to qualify.
In the remaining exams, I did well and qualified them, but these weren't sufficient for my father. He wanted me to clear JEE. The result was declared and I got 2 marks in it. As I mentioned that everyone in my family is engineer, I have competitions in my family too. That day I promised my dad to just give me a year to prove myself. Thereafter, the interesting stuff I did was I tallied the pattern of the last five years’ questions of these three subjects. I figured out the topics that were asked the most in exam and focused on them only. I used to study from late night to early in the morning.
That time, I also had a startup idea, on which I used to study at noon. I appeared for JEE Main next year. This year, I cleared IIT JEE Main and scored 251 marks. I opted for Computer Science Engineering (CSE) and now it's my final year in the college. I started working on my startup company. It had been six months only. I had put enough time in knowing its market value, all necessary studies and skills. About two and a half years later I started with its study. After these years I felt that now I had sufficient knowledge to start it. Because once, my excitement had led me to wait for a year to move ahead in my life. But I took that failure as a lesson because during that one year, I explored a lot.
My college life
The college life till now was full of laughter and hurdles. I learned a lot, not only academics but other stuff which matter a lot to me like giving importance to family, friendships, relationships; taking care of responsibilities; and focusing on the future. I also realised what I literally wanted in my life, what this life means to me and much more. In the end, all is well that ends well. Focus, determination, dedication, devotion, discipline and never give up attitude are all one needs in life, everywhere.
