Bangalore University to function as three varsities from 2017-2018 academic year
After almost 2 years that the State government had announced the trifurcation of Bangalore University, it is expected to start functioning as three separate universities.
According to a report, the university will start functioning as three universities from 2017-2018 academic session.
Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Rayareddy said after a meeting with the varsity officials that the government will issue an executive order to ensure that the three universities start functioning from June 1.
In 2015, the State government had announced the trifurcation of the university, but all the affiliated colleges, departments and staff continued to be under the parent Bangalore University. The committee to oversee the trifurcation was formed in November 2016 but no step has been taken towards it.
“The academic year will begin in July. By then, we will have appointed vice-chancellors for the two new universities,” he said was quoted as saying by the leading daily.
Bengaluru North University is likely to function temporarily from the Karnataka State Open University building in Kolar while Bengaluru Central University’s headquarters will be Central College. The transfer of properties will take place shortly.
However, the state government is yet to allocate funds for the two new universities. The proposal submitted by the special officer for Bengaluru Central notes an expenditure of Rs 1000 crore and an outlay of Rs 485 crore.
The parent university has been ordered to provide funds for the two new varsities. So far Rs 3 crore has been given to the two new varsities.
