UGC-Approved Central Universities in North India - There are 56 Central Universities in India. These universities are established under an Act of Parliament. Central universities are directly controlled by the Department of Higher Education, which works under the Union Human Resource Development Ministry. The University Grants Commission (UGC) typically provides all the funding required for the development and maintenance of these universities. Central universities are also commonly known as union universities. While some central universities have built a strong credibility over years of their operations, some central universities are relatively new. 1. Delhi University (DU), Delhi

Delhi University was established in 1922 and is one of the largest central universities in India. Currently, the university has 77 affiliated colleges, over 86 academic departments, over 500 programmes, and 16 faculties.

As per the NIRF Ranking 2025, DU is ranked as the 5th best university in India. Earlier, in NIRF 2024 Ranking, Delhi University was listed in the 6th position. 

Q:   Are all BHU courses offered through CUET only?
A:

Admission to most of the BHU UG and PG courses is through CUET score. However, for some courses such as PhD, MFA, etc. the university has a separate admission criteria. Candidates must check the admission requirement for the preferred course before applying for admission.

Q:   What types of courses are offered at JNU?
A:

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) offers courses including BTech and BA (Hons) at the undergraduate level. At the postgraduate level, JNU offers a two-year full-time MBA, MA, MTech, MSc, MCA, MPH and PGD courses. At the doctorate level, the University offers PhD courses covering several specialisations. JNU also offers Certificate of Proficiency (COP) courses as well. The fee, eligibility and selection criteria vary from one course to another. 

Q:   Is B.A course offerd in JNU?
A:

Yes, ther is BA course at JNU. School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies, functioning at JNU offers a full-time BA (Hons) programme for a duration of three years. Candidates are selected for JNU BA (Hons) courses based on their merit in CUET,  conducted by NTA. The University also offers lateral entry admission to the second year of the BA (Hons) programme.

3. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi

Q:   Which courses of JNU are under CUET?
A:

Admission to Jawaharlal Nehru University BA (Hons) in Foreign Languages, BSc-MSc Integrated Programme in Ayurveda Biology and Certificate of Proficiencey (COP) courses is through CUET (UG). Only the aspirants with a valid score of CUET are eligible to take admission in these courses. Moreover, the application for the same has to be submitted by visiting the JNU admission portal.

6. South Asian University (SAU), Delhi

South Asian University is an international university established by the governments of eight countries of the South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation (SAARC) in 2010. These countries include Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
