- JMI University was established in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh on October 29, 1920. This was made possible due to the demands of Mahatma Gandhi and Aligarh Muslim University students to create a separate Muslim institution without British influence.
- Jamia Millia Islamia moved from Aligarh to Karol Bagh, New Delhi, in 1925. From there, the university campus shifted to the new establishment at Jamia Nagar, Delhi.
- Jamia Millia Islamia finally received the status of a 'Central University' by an act of the Parliament in 1988.
