IIM Rohtak provides a plethora of opportunities to hone one’s skills: Anmol Gupta

IIM Rohtak

It was during my secondary school that I was handed a mobile phone. It was meant to be a source of communication with my parents as I was in a boarding school, however, it fascinated me towards electronics and I started aspiring to be an Engineer in the electronics domain. This led me to choose Science background for Senior Secondary Education.

To fulfill my dreams, I joined JSS Academy of Technical Education, Noida for pursuing BTech in Electronics and Communication. It was a great learning experience of four years, but unfortunately, I secured a job in the IT sector and not in the electronics domain. I did not get disheartened with this and gave 100% to my job. It was during my job I learnt that I needed to do something extra for being able to stand out from the crowd. I had developed keen liking towards numbers and analytics during my short professional tenure, hence I started to prepare for MBA as Finance and Analytics was the thing I looked forward to.

Finally, my hard work paid off and I secured admission in IIM Rohtak which is the 4th IIM in the nation to be affiliated with CFA Institute and is respected in the B-School for its analytics driven approach.

How I cracked college admission

Admission in IIMs is secured through cracking the coveted ‘Common Admission Test’ and so was the case with me. I cracked CAT in 2016 along with working full time in an IT firm. As I was short of time to join a full time coaching class, I only joined test series of Career Launcher and IMS.

My preparation schedule for CAT was pretty simple. I used to give 1 mock test and then spend time in analysing it. In this way I was able to identify my weaknesses and strengths and hence made my strategy keeping them in mind.

I appeared not only for CAT, but also for other B-School entrance exams like NMAT, SNAP, IIFT and XAT. I had cleared the cut-off of all these exams, however, it was the tag of IIM that attracted me the most. I was willing to get into one of the older IIMs of the country which I couldn’t get through, but after studying for a year in IIM Rohtak and following the case-based pedagogy in curriculum, I seriously feel privileged to be a part of the IIM community.

After all, I believe it’s the students who make a college and not the college that decides the fate of the students.

I’ll put in all my efforts to leverage the platform provided by IIM Rohtak and reach the pinnacle of success in the management domain.

How I spend my college years?

The first year of my college life at IIM Rohtak has been no less than a roller coaster ride. I’ve experienced everything from late night parties to late night submissions and lectures. There wasn’t even time to think what I like or dislike and the entire year passed with a blink of an eye.

IIM Rohtak provided me a plethora of opportunities to hone my skills through case competitions, guest lectures, management summits etc. I tried to cash in all these platforms made available to me and in the first year itself I was able to be the national finalist of three corporate competitions. I’ve also been awarded the 14th Most Competitive Business Leader of the Year by Dare2Compete. Carrying this love for competitions forward, I also became a member of the Competition Cell which trains the students for corporate competitions.

I’ve also been a part of the Public Relations Cell at IIM Rohtak wherein I’m heading the Editorial Team. Being a member of the PR Cell has improved my written as well as verbal communication skills big time. Also, I was able to learn time management, leadership skills as well as team dynamics.

I’m also an ardent lover of the culture of IIM Rohtak and I like to enjoy each and every activity which happens at the institute. Whether it’s the celebration of any festival or organization of any event like Marathon or TEDx, I am always there to both give my services in the organizing committee as well as enjoy the same.

If given a chance, I’ll definitely wish to increase the scale of the events at IIM Rohtak. There’s still space left to increase the magnanimity of the annual cultural fest: Infusion which would be followed with increase in the footfall as well as visibility in the nation.

‘IIM’, that’s enough for the world, but it is the suffix of Rohtak to this title that I call my individuality. Colloquially termed as Kathor, which is Rohtak spelled backward, IIM Rohtak has put me through the extremes in terms of academics, extracurricular and environment and this rigor is what has developed in me a lot of persistence, patience and a desire to be always better in terms of my skills and abilities.
