How MBA brought out my most confident version: Sunpreet Singh
I guess choosing what to do with our lives professionally is one of the most difficult tasks. Making the choice is more difficult than actually doing the thing. When I was younger, I always thought of opting for Science stream in class XI. But guess what- I had a change of mind when I actually reached the point where I had to make the choice. In the end, I chose Commerce stream because my whole family was from the commerce background. And I made the right choice there. That’s because once I started to study Accountancy, I started to love the subject altogether. I was weak at the theoretical portion but still, I went ahead with it and in the end, I found myself performing well in Commerce subjects. Then, school life got over.
It was the time to choose a college for graduation. For once, I thought I would be going out of my home town for my further studies, but due to financial problems, I could not. Because of that, I had to choose Shri J.N. PG College, which is one of the famous colleges in Lucknow. I did well in my graduation by scoring exactly 60% marks. The main part of the story starts from here− when I finished my graduation− because now, I again had to choose what to do. I had two options- either to do what my father wanted or do what I wanted. My dad wanted me to apply for PSUs but I wanted to pursue MBA. My father was completely against MBA due to some personal reasons. It was a hard fight to convince him to let me do MBA. Now, I am studying at LM Thapar School of Management.
Getting admission in a good MBA college is a tough task. There are various obstacles you come across, like exams, interviews, GDs, etc. I also came across these obstacles. For getting into LM Thapar School of Management, I preferred NMAT, in which I scored 169. I also gave CAT, SNAP, and CMAT exams, in which I didn’t do so well. I opted for my current college because I fulfilled every requirement to apply to its MBA program. I went through GD and PI rounds, which took place on their campus in Mohali itself. I got selected for the college.
For preparing for my exams, I joined IMS, Lucknow which is one of the reputed institutions for this. They helped as much as they could to make me ready for the doomsday i.e. the days of the entrance exams.
I wanted to opt for NIBM, Pune for MBA in Banking and Finance but due to certain family issues, I had to choose LM Thapar School of Management. It is also a good college providing me with good facilities like infrastructure, placements, mess food, etc. I am happy to be at LM Thapar School of Management.
After my classes get over, I spend some time in my room to take rest. Then, in the evening, I go to the mess to have a cup of tea and talk to my friends or seniors or teachers, whosoever is free at that time. I like to attend ‘Excel Modelling’ and ‘Financial Reporting and Accounting’ classes, as they both are my favourite subjects. Moreover, the faculties of these two subjects are also good. The teachers help in every way they can to make us learn and improve in their subjects.
I am a part of the college volleyball team, badminton team, and cricket team. Another group which I am part of is our social service group named NSS LMTSOM. I am the student coordinator of the group. I am also a part of our college placement team. If given a chance, I would allow non-veg food in my mess because they don’t serve non-veg right now.
I also gave various interviews within my campus to be a part of the orators’ club, finance club, etc. Also, we have a group that teaches us how to deal with market securities in a stock exchange. There are many other activities which take place in our college. For example- Diwali fest. My friends and I opened a stall of roses and chillies, and we were the most profitable stall on the whole campus, so we were the winners.
I have grown in various aspects after joining LM Thapar School of Management. For example, I have gained the confidence to deal with unknown people and take an initiative if no one is taking, and to be open to criticism. I’ve started to acquire various soft skills, like talking to everyone respectfully. I never thought I could work hard in any way. But now, I have become a hard worker. For me, punctuality in working has become a priority. So, I can say that as a person, I have changed a lot.
