Annamalai University Chidambaram History:
- One of the oldest established universities in South India, spread over 1000 acres, came into existence on January 1, 1929.
- It was founded by Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar, a philanthropist and visionary.
- It was founded with the sole purpose of promoting the Tamil Language and Literature, for which the founder united three already established institutions.
- In the year 1928, Rajah Sir S. RM. Annamalai Chettiar handed over three of his founded institutions (in the early 1920s), Sri Minakshi College, Sri Minakshi Tamil College and Sri Minakshi Sanskrit College, to make a University.

The online/distance degrees offered by the Centre for Distance and Online Education at Annamalai University are valid. Previously, the University Grants Commission (UGC) did not approve its courses starting from 2015. However, Annamalai University DDE received relief from the Madras High Court in an order dated 21.01.2023. Subsequently, following a reassessment by the UGC, Annamalai DDE achieved a qualifying score of 3.38, which led to extending the validity of its programmes until 2027.
The university offers four-year full-time BE/BTech courses in various specialisations on-campus and through affiliated colleges. In addition, apart from the regular BE degree, Annamalai University also offers part-time BE courses covering four specialisations. BE Lateral entry courses are also available. Admission to the UG courses is based on merit, seats are further allotted to the shortlisted candidates through TNEA counselling. Some of the specialisations in which the course is offered are Chemical Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering and Electrical & Electronics Engineering, which have been accredited by the NBA with an ‘A’ Grade.
