Gautam Buddha University shortlists candidates for most of the courses based on GBU-ET. It is a university entrance exam conducted for admission to MBA, BTech, PhD, etc. National or state-level entrance exams such as GATE, CLAT, JEE Main, etc. are also accepted for a few courses. For courses such as BA, MA, MSc, MTech, etc., the admissions are based on merit in the last qualifying exam.

In order to apply for courses at Gautam Buddha University, the candidates have to meet the last educational qualification as per course requirement. However, for few of a courses the university conducts it's own entrance exam, GBU-ET. The syllabus for GBU-ET varies course-wise. The university offers eleven MSc specialisations at GBU. However, the eligibility requirements also differs as per requirement. For example, MSc in Biotechnology required BSc degree in Life Sciences/Biology/ Biotechnology or any area of Biology from any recognised university/ college with minimum 50% aggregate (45% for SC/ ST) or equivalent grade.
