Candidates need to complete a three-year Diploma preferably in the same branch (IT/CSE/CE/EE/ECE) with at least 45% aggregate (40% aggregate for reserved category) ), preferably from Himachal Pradesh State Board of Technical Education or equivalent to get admission in BTech (LE) programme.

In the first year of the BTech degree at HPU Shimla candidates go through the concepts that they've already studied in their Class 11 and Class 12. This is done so that students know the basics of the concepts that they're going to use during their time at the course. The first year also ensures that students coming from different boards are on the same level about necessary concepts required for engineering. Candidates who have taken admission into the university in the latent entry BTech programme do not have to go through these concepts in the first year.
