IGNOU Admission Overview 2026
IGNOU admissions are conducted in two sessions in a year-January and July. As per the multiple sources on web, more than 7 lakh students enrol in the IGNOU programmes every year. The university offers admission to candidates of any age meeting the eligibility requirements. The university conducts an entrance exam for some courses such as B.Ed, BSc Nursing and PhD.
IGNOU admission process includes registration, document submission, appearing for entrance test (if requireD) and fee payment. Currently, IGNOU offers more than 200 programmes at UG, PG, diploma, certificate and doctoral levels in distance education and online mode. These courses are a benefit to working professionals who cannot attend classes physically. Candidates have to apply on IGNOU Samarth Admission Portal for the preferred course.

IGNOU admission cycle opens twice in a year i.e. January and July. The registrations for January session usually begins in December and close by March. The July session for ODL/ Online programmes begin in May and continue till July. The mode of application is online for all the courses.

IGNOU Eligibility & Selection 2026
IGNOU UG admissions are held in January and June sessions. The Open University offers BA, BCom, BBA, BSc, B.L.I.Sc and other courses in various specialisations at the UG level. Most of these UG courses are offered via distance learning mode for three years' duration. However, BPP and BLIS courses are offered for one year. IGNOU PG Admission 2026: Eligibility & Selection Criteria
IGNOU offers various PG courses, such as MA, M.Sc, M.Com, MCA, MSW and MBA in various specialisations. The selection to most of these IGNOU PG courses is based on the merit scores obtained by the students in their UG degree. IGNOU Admission Process 2026
IGNOU admission is primarily merit-based. Candidates can fill out the IGNOU 2026 application form after creating a DEB ID. The DEB ID is essential for all students. Step 1: IGNOU Application Process 2026
IGNOU application process is completely online. Aspirants fulfilling the eligibility requirements can fill out the form as and when the applications open.
Step 2: IGNOU Selection Rounds 2026
Students who have applied for B.Ed, MBA or PB BSc Nursing must appear for the required entrance and check if they've qualified. The university announces IGNOU results on the official website of the university. Followed by application, application fee payment and entrance, students who have completed their registration can check their status by entering their registration number on the IGNOU admission status page. The university also notifies students about their admission confirmation or rejection through an email and a text message in the next two months.
The university reviews the admission forms submitted by the candidates. These forms are processed region-wise on a first-come-first-serve basis. Therefore, the time required for the processing of forms for different regional centres may vary depending on the number of applicants from the respective region. However, the university claims that within two months, every student receives admission confirmation via email or on the student portal.
Step 3: IGNOU Admission Confirmation 2026
Once the university communicates that the student is shortlisted, students need to pay the course admission fee as per the IGNOU fee structure to confirm their seat at the university.
IGNOU offers fee exemptions and reimbursement facilities to students belonging to reserved categories, such as SC and ST. These students are eligible for Government of India Scholarships. Such students are advised to collect scholarship forms from the Directorate of Social Welfare or from the office of the Social Welfare Officer of their State. This form must be filled out and submitted to the Regional Director at the Regional Centre for necessary certification by the Regional Director.
IGNOU Fees 2026
IGNOU fee structure includes multiple components such as the tuition fee and one-time fee, etc. The registration fee is non-refundable. IGNOU accepts fee payment in online mode via credit card/debit card/net banking. After completion of the first year, students need to pay the IGNOU re-registration fee to register for the admission year till the course completion. IGNOU Fee Refund Policy 2026
IGNOU University has set limited provision for admission cancellation and fee refund. The registration fee is not refunded in any case. In a case where admission is denied by the university, the programme fee is refunded after the processing fee deduction. The amount is transferred to the source account. IGNOU offers only very selective programmes to international students through its overseas partner institutes. These partner institutes render student support services to such students. Such students aspiring to pursue IGNOU programmes must contact the concerned partner institute in their vicinity and fill out the admission form along with the requisite fees within the stipulated time. Candidates who are selected for admission need to confirm their seat by paying the course fee. Here are few things that students will recieve after taking admission in IGNOU:
- Once a students get admission into IGNOU, he or she will recieve the enrollment number and ID for future login to the samarth portal of the university.
- Based on the choice made by the candidate while filling the application form, he or she will then recieve the study material. Soft copy is available on the official website of the university.
- Registered students also recieve a mail from the regional or study centre for counselling. It is an induction ceremony where the course is introduced to the students.

Yes, you can get a job abroad. There are certain organisations that do prefer full-time graduation but getting rejected everywhere should not be the scenario. IGNOU is recognised globally as a university. There may be other reasons for the rejection like in the current scenario, hiring is very specific, so hence, maybe your qualification does not match. IGNOU Application Process 2026
IGNOU application mode is online. The registrations for the July session are open. Candidates need to pay the application fee INR 1,000 for PhD courses. Candidates can check below the application steps:
1: Go to the official website of IGNOU and apply
Those willing to apply to courses that require a university-level entrance are required to fill out the exam form of IGNOU.
2: Fill in the user name and password and click on the 'Submit' button. The user name is then instantly sent to the candidate via email or SMS.
3: Then click on 'Login' button and fill the application form.
4: Pay the application fee and submit the form. The application fee for IGNOU courses is INR 300.
Students filling out the IGNOU application form also need to create a DEB-ID. Below are the steps to create a DEB-ID:
1: Create an ABC ID. (https://deb.ugc.ac.in/StudentDEBId)
2: Students then have to submit details in the box 'R'
3: Follow the instructions to create a DEB ID using the email ID and mobile number.

In case a candidate misses the deadline for IGNOU registration, he or she can write mail or contact the admission office for assistance. In case nothing can be done, he or she then needs to register in the next cycle. IGNOU conducts admission in two cycles-January and June. Admission to most of the courses is based on merit of the aspirants in the last qualifying exam. In case of courses such as B.Ed, PhD and PB BSc Nursing, admissions are offered based on entrance exam scores.
The total tuition fee for MBA at IGNOU ranges between INR 6,300 and INR 68,000. This fee is sourced from the sanctioning body/official website. It is however, still subject to changes and hence, is indicative. For more details, students can confirm the fee from the admission office. Apart from this, a non-refundable registration fee of INR 300 (unless specified otherwise) shall be charged along with the programme fee of first semester/year at the time of admission.

- First, is by visiting the official website at ignou.ac.in. On the official website, students can log in using their name and enrolment number (also referred to as the 10 digit unique control number) and see the status.
- The second way is to wait to post the application submission. However, this wait can extend up to two months. This is because the general waiting period confirmed by IGNOU for admission confirmation is two months. Once the status is confirmed, the university sends an SMS to the shortlisted candidate.

Assignments: Once a student joins an IGNOU programme, he or she needs to start working on assignments. The assignments are specific to each programme and need to submitted online or offline at the study centre.
Study Centre: All the dealings related to the course are done in the study centre. Students are allotted a study centre for all academic queries.
Exams: The university conducts exams twice in a year for January and July session. Students as per their enrollment year, need to appear for the term end exam.
Since there is no physical interaction, communication can be a barrier in IGNOU. Students need to mail or connect with the regional centre for their queries.
It is compulsory to carry IGNOU ID-Card when appearing for the exam. However, in case a students forgets to bring the same, he or she can show an identity proof like Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, etc. Most of the exam centres accept identity proof in such cases but to avoid any kind of conflict, students must carry their IGNOU ID-Card along with an identity proof and admit card.
Students need to submit assignments before the deadline given by the university. As per the information collated from web, If any student does not submit the assignment and recieves the hall ticket, he/ she can appear in the Term End Exam conducted by IGNOU University. However, the assignment section in the grade card will show 'Not Completed'. Assignments are an integral part of the curriculum because the same carry 30% weightage during evaluation. A student for clearing his exam needs 40%, assignments carry a significant weightage in academics.
IGNOU results for PhD admission are out on the official website of the institute. Candidates who have at least 50% aggregate in the entrance test (45% aggregate in case of SC/ ST/ OBC (Non Creamy layers)/ Differently abled persons) are shortlisted for the interview subject to the maximum limit of five times of the available seats. The entrance test carries a weightage of 70% and 30% weightage is allocated to the interview/ viva.
All the admission forms submitted via the Online Admission System are scrutinised and confirmed for admission subject to the fulfilment of eligibility criteria. These forms are processed region-wise on a first-come-first-serve basis. Therefore, the time required for the processing of forms for different regional centres may vary depending on the number of applicants from the respective region. As per a recent notification released by the IGNOU university, SC/ST students seeking fresh admission and re-registration to the July session of IGNOU admission are exempted from fee payment. Students willing to avail themselves of this facility must submit their applications online along with a soft copy of the documents required for the claim.
