Projects & Workshops in Welingkar Institute of Management
A highlight of the pedagogy designed by the college is the inclusion of a mega academic project called the Global Citizen Leadership (GCL) spread across two trimesters.
Welingkar is a B-school that always believes in letting its students learn in an experiential than a bookish manner. This not only helps students understand the academic concepts better but also makes them use those concepts well in real-life scenarios. Hence, the college regularly comes up with interesting and enriching projects as well as workshops for the students to get great hands-on exposure. The syllabus across courses is also designed in such a way that it includes an ample number of projects, big and small in scope. Welingkar Institute of Management hosts workshops, rural immersions and industrial visits across various topics such as data analysis, problem-solving and decision making, etc.
Global Citizen Leadership Project
A unique highlight of the pedagogy designed by the Welingkar Institute of Management is the inclusion of a mega academic project called as the Global Citizen Leadership (GCL) spread across two trimesters. This project basically deals with providing students with real-life business case studies and guiding them well to come up with feasible as well as effective solutions. Throughout the course of GCL, students are divided into different teams of 5-6 people (or more/less as per the project’s scope) and are mentored by a professor. The GCL is segregated into multiple phases, with each phase given a fixed deadline and marks. Periodic meetups with the associated professors are arranged to ensure the project is on track. One thing to note is that GCL carries a lot of weightage, hence the student needs to execute it carefully and skilfully. The top ten GCL projects across the college receive a special mention by the College Director himself. In short, the GCL acts as a great platform to implement academic learnings into corporate challenges.
Other Projects and Workshops
In some courses such as PGDM e-Business, there are no lectures conducted on multiple subjects in the sixth trimester. Instead, a research project is assigned to each student as per his/her interest and a mentor is allotted accordingly. The entire trimester duration of about two to three months is provided to complete it followed by a viva.
When it comes to workshops, some subjects such as “Consumer Behaviour” demands value-addition, wherein students get to know why consumers behave in a certain way. Many conferences, seminars, conclaves, hackathons, etc. are conducted both inside and outside the college premises. A standout workshop here is the Smart India Hackathon which brings students from different colleges together to solve problems based on a common theme. This annual event is hosted by Welingkar on its campus itself. The college professors encourage students to participate in various workshops and seminars held. As long as it does not hamper their studies and college work, students are completely free to undertake projects on their own too which helps a lot in building a CV.
To conclude, Welingkar conducts ample workshops and projects for its students which may or may not be an official part of the academic curriculum. But irrespective of that, all these go a very long way in making learning fun, interesting and insightful.
