Teaching-learning methodology in DPGITM

4 mins readUpdated on May 14, 2021 20:28 IST

In DPGITM, the act of teaching and learning considers the factors that helps to modify the understanding and experience of students. We emphasise on learning, organisation, and instructional approach. The development of student’s progress is not just a matter of learning or memorising but it should be more practical, experimental, and logical. We try to add more concepts, humor, and a basic understanding of the subject matter to influence the overall teaching methodology. The subjects taught have certain objectives of teaching that have to be achieved to explain the ultimate subject matter. The objectives can be the development of intellectual abilities, social insights, practical skills, and attitude towards the subject. With the acquisition of these abilities, the students will be able to generalise, interpret, explain, or create the information.

The specialised teachers in DPG Institute of Technology and Management focus on the scientific and engineering domains of education and intend to make students more aware of the total act of practical experiences. Test materials were provided to the students to grasp theoretical concepts to achieve further stages of education. The teaching methodology involves the delivery of lessons from courses and helps students to develop constructional, discovery and problem-solving skills. Formal tests or examinations are conducted to check and evaluate the progress of students after long intervals of learning. The results are assessed to achieve the purpose of diagnosing at least minimal level of competence, application, and transfer of problem situation in the students.

Our focus: Pedagogical learning

It is observed that learning becomes more effective when students and teachers work together to achieve a common goal. It strengthens student-teacher interaction and improves understanding between them. To achieve this, instructional activities are designed to accomplish the common goal. The professors at our campus develop critical thinking skills in young minds to inspire innovative and creative ideas. To prepare students for the future is highly challenging for educators. Deep learning is one of the methods wherein principles from one situation are implicated in another situation. The core skills in deep learning involve communication, creativity, character, collaboration, and critical thinking. On the other hand, when teaching is linked to everyday experiences in daily life, learning becomes more effective and deepened with related questionnaires which create interest and motivation for learning in students.

We provide a platform for discussion rounds on topics that advance their understanding of Science and their concepts like professionals. Discussion can lead to contrasting ideas by asking open-ended questions. Moreover, beyond classroom learning is also encouraged in the institute by organising field trips and visiting sites. As we are in the engineering and technology sector, therefore, we focus on the development of computational and problem-solving skills. This can be done in a linear process starting with decomposition of larger problems into smaller ones, pattern recognition by relating problem solving with past, abstraction i.e., keeping aside unimportant details followed by algorithms which involve identification and development of steps to reach a solution and lastly by refining these steps i.e., debugging. Above all, we provide remote lab access to the students to let them participate in user-friendly web interfaces to deepen their understanding and provides them opportunities for direct observation.

With this modern era, online teaching-learning mode is the most prominent and effective way in higher education. Various online sources, tools and platforms are available for finding, analysing, and applying knowledge. We believe in blended learning i.e., combining classrooms with online teaching to enhance the use of technology. Students can access the classroom videos, lecture notes and sources after the class also. Our educators are well advanced in technological implications they provide a more enhanced experience of learning by incorporating videos, animations, simulations, graphics etc., in their teaching.

Hence, for this 21st era learning, we are constantly evolving to develop pedagogies and teaching statements that can help students to grow more than basic memorisation and learning beyond surface knowledge. We try to make students learn concepts and relate them to the real world. We work together with our students to make them adapt methods that bring positive response, motivation and understanding in them. We assess and evaluate student’s performance and help them to improve and get success.
