Top Engineering Colleges in India for Placement 2019
Engineering degrees continue to be coveted in the Indian context. And this is essentially because of the ‘market value’ or the employability that this degree confers on its students. However, what exactly is this market value and how do different colleges compare in this regard? Read on to find out more.

Top 5 Engineering Colleges offering the best placements for UG and PG Programmes
Contrary to popular perception, IITs do not top the list of engineering colleges offering the best placements, although they do dominate the list of Top 25. The first three positions belong to International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad which is an autonomous university founded as recently as 1998 under the Not for profit-public private partnership (N-PPP) model. This is followed by Indian Institute of Information Technology-Allahabad and National Institute of Industrial Engineering, Mumbai. This is as per the latest data released by MHRD’s National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF). For campus placements that took place in the year 2017-18, the following five colleges have offered the best average median salaries across all their undergraduate and post graduate engineering programmes:
Does the list of Top 5 engineering colleges for placements look a little different for undergraduate programmes as opposed to post graduate programmes? Let’s find out:
Top 5 for placements to UG Engineering

2. Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad

Of these, growth in average median salaries has been rather varied. In IIT Kanpur, for example, median salaries for the UG 4 year BTech has grown by 8% whereas that of the 2 year PG programme as degrown by 2%. IIIT Hyderabad has seen a massive 41% growth in median salaries for their 5 year UG programme, whereas their 4 year BTech has seen a growth of 27% in the same.

Majority of the growth in average salaries have come again, not to the IITs (with the exception of Roorkee) but to private colleges situated in smaller towns. And if one were to factor in the batch size and the base salaries, colleges such as Vellore Institute of Technology and IIIT Hyderabad would appear to have achieved considerable feats since one has the largest batch size and the other, the largest base salary to cover. Following is the list of colleges that have seen the maximum growth in average median salaries offered to the graduating batch for UG:

For the PG programmes, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad has shown an improvement of 102% in their average median salary (Rs 6.6 lakh) offered to their outgoing batch followed by Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering, Bangalore that has shown a growth of 85 per cent (Rs 6 lakh salary). Average median salaries for PG programmes in engineering range from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 16.25 lakh for all NIRF ranked engineering colleges. Noteworthy growth has come to Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, Delhi (25% growth with a salary of Rs 12.50 lakh) and IIT Delhi (37% growth with a salary of Rs 12 lakh).
Placements Trends and ROI for 4-year BTech Vs 5-year Dual Degrees
Another interesting observation is that of placement prospects for a four-year engineering degree graduate as compared to a five-year engineering degree graduate. As can be seen by the numbers in the table below, students graduating from a five-year programme stood to gain on an average of Rs 1.5 lakh per annum in median salary. This is more than sufficient to offset an average of Rs 1.4 additional cost of the programme incurred on the additional one year of study. Of course this number varies greatly from one institute to another, but for a college like International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad where the fees is around Rs 10 lakh for a four year programme and Rs 13 lakh for a five year dual degree and the average median salary of is Rs 20.35 lakh and 22.50 lakh for a 4-year and 5-year degree graduate respectively, there is more than adequate justification for taking on that additional year of study.
Take a look at the table below:

Comparison of Growth of Salaries for 4-Year and 5-Year Engineering programmes
Average median salaries have grown more aggressively for the dual degree students in the last one year as compared to those of the four-year degree students.
A comparison of the average median salary of students in both four-year and five-year programmes is as follows:

The only caveat here is that five-year dual degree programmes are being offered at just 18 institutes hence there is fairly limited variety of options. These are as follows:
Indian Institute of Technology, Madras
Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University), Varanasi
Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi
Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad
Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad
International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad
Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram
Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design & Manufacturing, Chennai
