In a conversation with Shiksha.com, the experts at Amrita School of Engineering talk in detail about what makes Artificial Intelligence programme at their institute apt for students planning to make a career in the digital world. Q: How is Artificial Intelligence different from Data Science and Cloud Computing?

A: Artificial intelligence is basically machine intelligence that is created by humans beings based on algorithms or programming. It's in contrast to the normal human or animal intelligence. It's basically a vast topic. The scope of AI is unlimited.

Data Science is an umbrella term that includes machine learning and statistics. It also has certain aspects of Computer Science, including algorithms data storage and web application development.

Cloud Computing is the delivery of computing services, including servers, storage, databases, networking, software, analytics, and intelligence, over the Internet (‘the cloud’) to offer faster innovation, flexible resources, and economies of scale.

Q: What is the process to get admission to BTech programme at Amrita School of Engineering?

A: For aspirants seeking admission to BTech program at Poornima University must first fulfil the eligibility criteria. Candidates need to have a minimum aggregate of 60 per cent in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry and with not less than 55 per cent individually in each of these three subjects in Class 12.

Eligible candidates need to undergo either JEE Main exam or can also choose to take Amrita Entrance Exam which is a two-hour computer-based exam for PCM/PCB candidates and two-hour and thirty minutes exam for PCMB candidates.

We are an AICTE-approved School. We do not have any cut-off system. Admissions are offered on the basis of ranks in the qualifying exam. Out of the total, 70 per cent of the seat allotment is done on the basis of AEEE 2020 exam ranks and 30 per cent through JEE Mains 2020 ranks.

Q: Can you share some important dates related to admission process?

A: The Amrita Entrance Exam (AEEE) 2020 will be conducted in two phases. The slot booking for both the phases will start from June 15 and the last date to register is June 30. The dates are as follows:

Phase 1: July 11 and 12, 2020

Phase 2: July 24-26, 2020

The dates are subject to changes depending on the pandemic situation due to Covid-19.

The exam will be divided into three sections-Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics or Biology. It will be a total of 80 marks exam where +3 will be given for right answer and -1 will be deducted for every wrong answer.

Q: How is the curriculum designed? What are the different specialisation options available to students?

A: The four-year degree programme is divided into eight semesters and offers specialisation in:

  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Computer and Communication Engineering
  • Computer Science and Engineering
  • Computer Science and Engineering (Artificial Intelligence)
  • Electrical and Computer Engineering
  • Electrical and Electronics Engineering
  • Electronics and Communication Engineering
  • Electronics and Computer Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering

Q: What is the cost of programme? Do you also offer hostel facility?

A: At Amrita School of Engineering, we have a merit-based fee structure, our fees vary based on the ranks scored in AEEE and JEE Main. Also, it differs on the basis of Campus.

The Cost of the BTech proramme ranges between Rs 1 lakh per annum for top 10 per cent rank holders to Rs 3.25 lakh per annum for students bottom 50 per cent rank holders.

Q: Can you share some insights on placements?

A: The scope of AI is vast. Students can explore career opportunities in Automative, Robotics and Manufacturing sectors. We have a dedicated placement cell that works actively throughout the year to build strong relationships with the corporates and also in enhancing students' skills such as working on their soft skills, preparing them for interviews, aptitude tests, and group discussion rounds.

Also, it is mandatory for students to undergo internships twice during the curriculum for which we provide them complete support by inviting reputed organisation on the campus.

Amrita School of Engineering has a track record of over 96 per cent placements every year. The highest salary package we have witnessed this year was of Rs 52 lakh per annum.
