IIM Ahmedabad plans to add 800 seats

The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) is planning to increase the number of seats in its full-time MBA programme to over 1200.
Under the expansion programme suggested by the government last year, India’s premier management institute is working out on a plan to add 800 seats to the institutes. Four hundred seats will be added to the full-time MBA programme (PGP). The two-year PGP course currently has a strength of 860 students.
Rest of the four hundred seats will be added to the post-graduate programme for executives (PGPEX), fellow programmes and others.
According to a report by Hindustan Times, a proposal regarding the same has been submitted to the government.
The Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar had asked all the IIMs to submit plans for increasing students’ intake, in September 2016.
The government wants to increase the student intake at the IIMs to be increased from 10,000 to 20,000 by the year 2020.
The ministry had asked top six IIMs, Ahmedabad, Kozhikode, Bangalore, Lucknow, Indore and Calcutta for the plan.
Apart from increasing the B-schools’ intake capacity, the IIMs had then also decided to expand (the number of) doctoral programmes (PhD programmes) to address the shortage of faculty through creating quality PhDs.
The expansion will however, take upto five years to be implemented after the government nod. According to the report, the expansion will take place in two phases. In the first phase of three years, seat intake of PGP course will be increased. In the last two years, the institute will work on increasing the seat intake in PGPEX and other programmes.
