The university has a placement cell that organizes various activities to prepare students for placements, and around 50-60% of students got placed in various courses.

Cotton University application process varies for UG, PG, and PhD programmes. Candidates need to apply through the university website, and Assam State Admission Portal for PG and UG programmes respectively. As a Higher Education institution, Cotton College has gone through several milestones from the initial phase of being under Calcutta University to the present when it is one of the full-fledged autonomous state universities of Assam. It is a Public State University established in 1901 by Sir Henry Stedman Cotton, the Chief Commissioner of the erstwhile British province of Assam.

It was established in 2017 by the provisions of an Act enacted by Assam Legislative Assembly to merge the Cotton College State University and Cotton College.
