Candidates need to pass IIT JAM with a good rank to get a seat in the MSc programme of IIT Patna. The seats are offered in the MSc programme via CCMN Counselling. STEP 1: IIT Patna Application Process 2026
Aspirants have via entrance exam for BTech, MTech and MSc courses. Students need to register and appear for the test. For PhD, aspirants have to fill out the form on the institute's website. Candidates also have to apply for MTech on institute's website after seat allotment. Check below course-wise application process:
- BTech and BTech Dual degree aspirants must fill out the application form for JEE Main via the official website of the National Testing Agency (NTA) (nta.ac.in). The application fee for boys is INR 1,000 and INR 800 for girls.
- MTech candidates are required to register for GATE via the official website of the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS) (appsgate.iitd.ac.in). The application fee for boys is INR 2,000 and INR 1,000 for girls. Aspirants also have to apply on the institute's website. The application fees for MTech is INR 1,000 and INR 500 for female (INR 500 for SC/ ST/ PwD category). For sponsored, self-financed and part-time category, application fees is INR 1,000.

Aspirants must score equal or more than IIT Patna cutoff for admission. Candidates need to pass JEE Main and JEE Advanced for BTech and BTech Dual Degree, IIT JAM for MSc and GATE for MTech. Aspirants seeking admission in Integrated MSc + PhD can apply via IIT JAM. They do not have to pass GATE/ NET for admission.
- For BTech/ BTech Dual Degree: JEE Advanced cutoff 2026 is out for IIT Patna BTech. The most competitive specialisation was CSE with a closing rank of 3635 for General AI category.
- For MSc: Students have to score equal or above IIT JAM cutoff for MSc. As per IIT Patna IIT JAM 2026 cutoff, the closing rank was between 721-740.

In general, students admitted to the particular branch of the undergraduate BTech course must continue studying that branch till completion. However, in special cases the institute may permit a student admitted through JEE to change their branch of study after the first two semesters. Such changes are permitted only for students who have completed all the common credits required in the first two semesters of their studies, in their first attempt, without having had to pass any course requirement in the summer term examination.

IIT Patna gives MCM scholarships to meritorious and needy students. A UG student or a 2-year MSc programme student can receive the MCM scholarship. For new entrants (BTech/MSc 1st year), their SPI will be the criterion for their merit. The minimum SPI is 6.50 and there is no "F" grade in any of the courses in the first semester. For students in their 2nd year (BTech/MSc) onwards, the minimum CPI is 6.50 and there is no "F" grade. For all category students, the annual income of a student's parents or guardians and his family from all sources in the preceding financial year must not exceed INR 4.50 lakh.
IIT Patna offer Merit-cum-Means Scholarship to students. Under this scholarship, General and OBC students get INR 1,000 per month for two semesters (8 semesters in a year) and a free tuition fees. SC and ST students get free messing, exemption from hostel room rent and pocket allowance of INR 250 per month.

The cutoff trend for BTech at IIT Patna has been increasing in the recent years. In 2021, the closing rank for B.Tech. under general category for all India quota was 14216. In 2022, it increased to 14895. Likewise, the cut off ranks have changed from 5243 to 5285 for OBC, 2861 to 2793 for SC, 2861 to 1336 for ST, 2046 to 2226 for EWS. This trend is likely to continue in the coming years, as the demand for engineering education in India continues to grow. Similar cut off trend can be seen for female candidates under all categories however the ranks are slightly different.
IIT Patna is a fast-growing Engineering institute in India. It is not top tier like old IITs. However, it is ranked by various ranking agencies. It was ranked at '19' under 'Engineering' category in NIRF 2025 rankings. Talking about placements, he overall the highest package recorded during the placement drive 2025-26 was INR 117 LPA.
IIT Patna conducts written test for admission in M.Tech under sponsored and self-financed category. It also conducts a written test for PhD programme. Aspirants can also get admission in PhD via scores in UGC-NET, CSIR-NET, GATE, etc. Selected candidates also need to pass a PI round conducted by the institute.
Candidates must pass master's degree in relevant stream wit at least 6.5 CGPA or 60% aggregate to apply for PhD programme at IIT Patna. The upper age limit is 28 years to apply for PhD. There is relaxation up to 5 years for candidates belonging to SC, ST, OBC, Women and PwD category.
