Commonly asked questions
Q:   What is the rank for 40 marks in GATE?
A:

40 marks in GATE will approximately give a rank between 2000 to 5000 depending on the paper difficulty level and the number of registered candidates in that particular branch.  Obtaining 40 marks is mainly considered average, opening chances to a few new IITs (less popular branches) and NITs.

However, rank for 40 marks in the Graduate Aptitude in Engineering can give a different rank value for different branches and disciplines. For example, 40 marks in GATE CSE can correspond to 2000 to 5000 rank. On the other hand, 40 marks in GATE ME, can correspond to 2700 - 7100 rank.

Advice to students who secured 40 marks in GATE exam: Better to apply in some state-level colleges or new NITs.

Q:   What is the cutoff score in GATE?
A:

The cutoff score in GATE is the minimum mark required to qualify for the exam. The conducting body releases the qualifying cutoff along with result. It determines, whether a candidate is eligible to participate in the counselling round or not.

The cutoff score in GATE varies every year (category-wise), depending on the number of students registered, difficulty level of the question paper, and previous year's trends. The GATE cutoff score are mainly of two types - admission and qualifying cutoff.

Q:   When will IIT Guwahati release GATE 2026 cutoff?
A:

Indian Institute of Technology will release GATE cutoff 2026 soon. The IITG GATE 2026 result has been declared. The conducting body releases the exam result and cutoff for all 30 subjects. The cutoff for GATE 2026 will be available category-wise. Candidates securing the minimum cutoff will be eligible to participate in counselling.

GATE 2026 Cutoff: Branch-Wise Minimum Qualifying Cutoff

Candidates can check the GATE 2026 expected cutoff below. But before we begin, let’s understand the meaning of the expected cutoff in GATE 2026 -

What does GATE expected cutoff mean?

The GATE expected cutoff generally means the prediction or analysis made by the experts and students looking at the past year’s trends and records. The expected cutoff is not final, and just gives an idea to students to analyse their performance and estimate their AIR, and strategise on how to plan their choices for GATE counselling. The GATE minimum qualifying cutoff and admission cutoff are different.

Considering the eligibility for admission process, the GATE cutoff is the minimum qualifying mark required to get admission for MTech in IITs, NITs, or CFTIs.

Factors Affecting GATE Cutoff 2026: Admission Vs Qualifying Cutoff

Qualifying GATE exam, offers opportunities to pursue MTech or PhD at reputed Indian Institutes of Technology, such IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, etc. However, before taking admission through GATE scores, two different types of cutoff play a major role: GATE admission cutoff and qualifying cutoff, which depend on several other factors, which are as follows-

  • Number of registered students
  • Total seat intake in IIT through GATE 2026 MTech
  • Qualifying cutoff mark
  • Applicant's category

GATE 2026 Admission Cutoff Vs Qualifying Cutoff

The GATE qualifying cutoff is the institute's eligibility cutoff. On the other hand, the admission cutoff is mainly for admission at IITs, NITs, IIITs, etc. The GATE counselling 2026 is done by two respective different portals. COAP for IITs and IISc Bangalore admission, and CCMT GATE counselling for NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs. The opening and closing cutoff will be released by the respective portals on the given date.

The difference between GATE qualifying and admission cutoff can be checked below -

Qualifying GATE cutoffs

Admission GATE cutoffs

Also known as the eligibility cutoff for IITs, NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs, it is the minimum marks a candidate must score to be eligible for admission.

It is the final opening and closing ranks score fixed by the participating institutes to select candidates.

Meeting the qualifying cutoff does not mean the candidate will be selected for admission.

Meeting the admission GATE cutoff does not mean the candidate will be selected.

It is announced by the conducting IIT and is available on GOAPS

It is released by individual participating institutes and available on their respective counselling portal: CCMT/COAP.

It includes qualifying marks for each paper

It includes opening and closing ranks for courses offered at participating institutes.

GATE 2026 Safe Score for NITs and IITs Admission

The safe score in GATE exam is the minimum mark that is required for admission to your desired college or institute. The GATE safe score must be more than qualifying cutoff mark released by the conducting body. It can vary by paper depending on the competition, branch popularity, cutoff scores, etc.

  • Ideally, for admission to IITs, the safe score can be around 700 to 800 or more. However, for IISc Bangalore admission, the requirement is higher (approx 900+) for CSE, DA, EE, and ME branches.
  • For top NITs, 700+ is considered as safe score. Again, for different branches, it can be different. Therefore, candidates are advised to research properly and review past college and GATE admission cutoffs to plan for counselling.

What is GATE Acceptance Rate?

The GATE acceptance rate usually stays around 15 to 18% every year. Every year, around 6 to 7 lakh candidates appear for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, out of which around 1.2 to 1.5 lakh candidates qualify GATE exam.

Commonly asked questions
Q:   Is 65 marks in GATE good?
A:

Yes, 65 marks in GATE is considered as good and is expected to correspond to a AIR of 800-1000. Students who secure 65 marks do have good options in getting into IITs and NITs for branches like EE, ME, CE, etc.

Q:   What after GATE result?
A:

After the declaration of GATE result, the qualified candidates will have to participate in counselling process. It must be noted that, IIT Guwahati does not conduct GATE counselling.

Admission counselling is done by COAP and CCMT portals.

  • Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP) is the centralised portal for counselling used by IITs and IISc that allow GATE qualified candidates to view and accept choices for M.Tech or PSU jobs based on their scores.

  • On the other hand, CCMT (Centralised counselling for MTech/MArch/M.Plan) portal used for offering M.Tech admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.

Q:   Which M.Tech branch has the highest salary through GATE?
A:

MTech in CSE, ECE, ME, CE, DA, and EE usually have the highest salaries in India. Many IITs and IIITs offer placement packages over 50 LPA. However, the average package remains around 20 to 30 LPA.

For subjects like EE, CE, and ME opportunities for high salaries are mainly through PSU jobs, as these are core branches.
