B.Sc. in Biotechnology - Batch of 2024
3.0
The college is satisfactory.
Placements: The students with a percentage around 85 to 90 were placed in our batch. There was no placement cell available when we joined the college. We were told that it was in the process, but here we are, graduates now and still there is no placement cell yet. Even though there is no internship offered by the college itself,. If you want an internship in a college SRC, then you have to pay 4000 rupees and 18% tax for it. I think they should at least offer an internship if they are not giving placements.
Infrastructure: There are only 2 classrooms for biotechnology students. There should be at least 3 classrooms because then we have to shift immediately after our lectures and sit in the lab or any vacant classrooms. Even in vacant classrooms we are thrown out because our degree has allotted a certain number of classrooms and only those should be used but our classrooms are never vacant .
Faculty: The teachers here are very helpful during the examinations, especially. The course does not fully make a student industry ready but the curriculum taught is quite knowledgeable. The semester exams are not difficult if you study properly. The staff provides you with a question bank to solve.

B.Sc. in Biotechnology - Batch of 2021

It's the best college in Mumbai for biotechnology and is located in a lush green area of Mulund.
Placements: Unfortunately, placements were not conducted by our college, even for final year students of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. However, from the year 2020, our college has been granted autonomy by the University of Mumbai. It is assured by the principal to conduct placements from this academic year among all faculty members. More than 40% of students had some internships in good biopharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, including the scientific research centre (SRC), which focuses on essential oil extraction and plant biotechnology by plant tissue culture (PTC). The course provides immense theoretical knowledge of all the concepts required for industry and academia interface. But the course lacks sufficient practical skills.
Infrastructure: Our college has a huge campus and is located in a lush green area of Mithagar road, Mulund east area next to the eastern express highway. Our college is about 1 km away, which takes 10 minutes to walk from Mulund railway station. Our college is well connected by road from Thane and Mumbai suburban cities like Bhandup, Ghatkopar, Kanjurmarg, etc. It is well-equipped with a library, canteen, labs, reading and periodical areas, etc. There are well maintained and well-facilitated labs for chemistry, botany, zoology, physics and biotechnology. The instruments provided in the labs are funded under Star College Scheme by DBT (department of biotechnology), Government of India. In spite of having good labs, there is an issue of accommodation of all students and a lack of instruments for personal use. Many times there is a situation that about 8-10 students share a single instrument like a microscope, colorimeter, pH meter, etc. There is a huge gymnasium with all indoor games equipment and a huge ground for sports activities. There is a hostel facility, but nearby, paying guest (PG) facility is available. The canteen has good varieties of food items, and they are of low cost due to student subsidy. The campus has free Jio network Wi-Fi, but it blocks few sites and restricts only basic usage. Even the campus faces a lot of network issues for all telephone operators like Airtel, Vodafone, Jio, etc. Classrooms are plenty with whiteboard and projector and PC facility.
Faculty: The biotechnology department of our college is one of the best departments under self-financing courses of degree college. The faculty members here consist of 5 teachers with doctorates and subjects like microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, animal biotechnology and plant biotechnology. They are well-experienced academicians with excellent teaching skills of their specialised subject by using all teaching aids available. They conduct online as well as offline lectures and provide proper reference materials and notes. They conduct practicals and weekly assignments. Moreover, they organise lectures by guest speakers for various disciplines. Even they conduct workshops and guidance lectures for different topics. The faculty members have a good collection of more than 100 reference books with 2-3 copies for reference. The 3 years B.Sc biotechnology programme contains a good knowledge of a plethora of interdisciplinary subjects like chemistry, molecular biology, life sciences, immunology, microbiology, environmental sciences and plant biotechnology. But the curriculum lacks sufficient practical skills, which are necessary for industry jobs and applied research. The department promotes students to take part in research conventions, conferences, webinars, etc.
Other: The campus is happening and highly crowded from various disciplines. Our college conducts intercollegiate competitions along with the promotion of cultural activities like Vaze Vitee dance and drama, Dhruva Sanskrit fest, treasure hunt, science association, NSS, women development cell, placement cell, IQVAC, career guidance cell, research promotions committee, English literary club, G.D Kelkar skill development courses like mushroom cultivation, foreign languages like German, Japanese, Spanish, French, etc. Our college offers a B.Voc course on travel tourism first time in Mumbai University. Our college has its own magazine known as Mayur and Vaze newsletter. Our college organises an annual function as well as Dimensions fest which have various events for 2 days with intercollegiate competitions, DG wars and many more. The entire college is crowded with students during Dimensions fest as every year they invite a celebrity including Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Subodh Bhave, Ankush Chaudhari, Prajakta Koli (YouTuber who is popularly known by her YouTube name MostlySane), etc. I chose this course as this college is recognised under the top 5 colleges in pan India as the best biotechnology college. SRC is also associated with it for research in further industrial jobs. Our college has low tuition fees and all the facilities required for students.

Absolutely dissatisfied by the faculty.
Placements: I don't have any idea about the placements over there because for both B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Biotechnology there is only a single batch of students and hence no placements because of that. We have to search for the job after graduation or post-graduation.
Infrastructure: The infrastructure is nice. There is one full floor given to a library. Wi-Fi connection is absolutely useless. For our department I. e for biotechnology there was no fix classroom for students. We have to wonder here and there for a empty classroom to get the lecture started until B.Sc. but in M.Sc. lectures weren't happening so I think there is no need of classrooms.
Faculty: I am pursuing M.Sc. biotechnology in kelkar college. The teaching staff is useless. They are not punctual at all. Although they are qualified enough to teach us they don't even bother if we fail or pass in the exams because they won't take our lectures and when we use to ask them about M.Sc. lectures they use to say - "why do you people need lectures". We complained about this to the principle but no use. College's department of biotechnology doesn't care about students and won't approach them. It was a proper self study course instead our money gets waste by taking admission in this college ( specifically for M.Sc. in Biotechnology). I won't comment on teaching quality because our teachers doesn't use to teach us.
Other: College has an event called dimensions.

Our college provides good infrastructure, labs, qualified faculty and extracurricular activities.
Placements: I don't have a very good idea about the placement opportunities of our college as this is my first year here. But talking to my seniors, I have heard that a good number of students get placed in good companies for jobs and internship programs every year.
Infrastructure: Classrooms are spacious, and the laboratories are well-equipped with sufficient resources. Good and a wide variety of food is served in the canteen at reasonable prices. Gymkhana, common rooms and grounds are available, which help students to relax and try out new games and sports. Our college does not provide hostel facility for students.
Faculty: Faculty members in our college are well trained and qualified. They are helpful, and they try to make the learning process easier for the students. The course curriculum is consistent with today's industry. Practical sessions conducted by them help us develop and polish our performance and equipment handling skills.
Other: Yearly fest named Dimensions is organised by the students, which help them to try out various new things outside of their course and routine.

Satisfied with faculty and Infrastructure.
Placements: Almost all students after B.Sc. Biotechnology pursue Masters in their field of interests but still you can get different types of internships at good companies, they arrange seminars regarding guidance for placement or internships. In short, good scope for career.
Infrastructure: Limited Wi-Fi facility for educational use, well-equipped laboratories, there are 3-4 libraries according to different courses where you can get all information and knowledge regarding your interest and extra knowledge, there is no hostel facility and canteen food is best and affordable.
Faculty: Well experienced and highly qualified faculty along with supportive non teaching staff,. The faculty here guides you not only with curriculum but also with your interests in different fields of biotechnology regarding different projects, they arrange different hands on training programs to make you industry ready.

Lots of improvement needed!
Placements: There are no campus placements for the department of biotechnology. As a result students had to apply from other sources for jobs or for obtaining hands on training. Though there is a placement cell, it may be for other departments / fields. No information is given on future job opportunities.
Infrastructure: Infractures is better than other colleges. Labs are good but lot of improvement needed. We have two libraries. There is shortage of books for self finance courses ( at least for biotechnology) canteen is good enough also quality of food is satisfactory. We have campus though not a big one. Gymkhana is not upto the mark. Wi-Fi is there in canteen and on the third flour. Hostel facility is not available.
Faculty: I am pursuing my degree in biotechnology. As it is affiliated to Mumbai University, the curriculum needs a lot of improvement. Improvement meaning in terms of practical knowledge. In this college lectures are not held properly. Teachers are helpful sometimes though they delay the work.
Other: We have fest called dimensions. It is really famous and many events are planed games are good enough.

Self study whole year as faculty disappoints students, no placements, good infrastructure.
Placements: In campus placements are not available. You have to hunt for jobs or research work outside. But yes you can apply for projects in college itself. Also in college while during practicals teachers don't support enough. You have to do everything mostly on your own. Labs don't have good microscopes, kits required for practicals. So most of days we wait for kits to come. Also we remain little confused as applications are not explained properly. Hence have difficult time hunting jobs.
Infrastructure: Infrastructure is good enough. College has spacious library. College has different libraries for self financing courses. Many classrooms are available. Each department (those who require) have spacious and clean labs. Food available in canteen are also tasty and reasonable. But many times you don't have place to seat as there is only one canteen and compared to the number of students, canteen is small. Oops, there are no hostel rooms in the campus. There are two auditoriums where functions are held.
Faculty: Teachers are helpful and qualified but are nor punctual neither do they bother to take lectures. Students have to ask them again and again if there is any lecture. And even if there are no lectures, students are not informed before and they simply travel from long distance to waste their 2 hrs. After 2hrs they come and say there are no lectures. Some teachers use ppts and some use whiteboard. There is no industry exposure. Whole year was self study. No use of faculty.
Other: College has it's own fest called Dimensions for 2 days which involves various games and DJ. Also campus crowd is decent. Campus has many trees and plants hence it feel good and cool. No great support for extracurricular activities.

The Kelkar has got nothing wrong to talk. Worth it from all aspects.
Placements: The placement department of the Kelkar college was terrific since it had given me a lot of opportunities and exposure to the outside world. Many seminars and workshops were conducted to improve our personality. Such development courses help the students to be cognitive, logical and attitudinal behaviours. Hence, the work of placement department is perfect.
Infrastructure: The college atmosphere is very positive. The college's infrastructure is clean, hygiene and well-maintained, and the Kelkar has ten to ten regarding these pointers. The college infrastructure is excellent since the arrangement of labs in the college is excellent, and the Kelkar has the biggest zoology lab in Mumbai, proud to have such spacious labs.
Faculty: The college comes from the Mumbai University, and hence it has that same syllabus which university follow. The faculty is very supportive no matter which department they belong. The only motto of our faculty is to improve the student's abilities and make them great pillars of our nation.
Other: The Dimensions are one of the biggest fests in the Mumbai. Many colleges participate and enjoy to the fullest. The college has provided with the fast Jio network for better connectivity. The spacious library and avid book readers make the most benefit out of it. The college has research centre within it. This college has perfumery and cosmetics sector where they make and research on those products.
