NIT Jalandhar admits students on the basis of merit in both UG and PG programmes. The merit lists are notified in reference to JEE main scores and GATE score for UG and PG resoectively. Students cannot get direct admission into the college. They must clear JEE main/GATE exam in accordance with the selection criteria of their preferred course. applicants must also register and attend the JoSAA/CCMT counselling process before seat allocation by the institution.

NIT Jalandhar has been ranked 55th by NIRF 2025 in the Engineering category. The central government gave this institute the status of National Institute of Technology (Deemed University).
