College life in Kerala (engineering college) in the 2020 COVID-19 era.
Placements: I completed B.Tech in Civil Engineering. During the COVID-19 pandemic (2020), the college couldn't arrange campus placements at all. As a Civil Engineering student, no companies offer top-tier packages for freshers. Some construction companies took part in the following years and gave placements to some students.
Infrastructure: I didn't get that so-called college hostel vibe from there. Formerly, it was a fully residential campus, and the hostel is monitored in that sense. It allots a fixed time for gathering, studying, and activities, and mobile phones. It provides more priority for studies. The food is edible but sometimes not palate-friendly. The college occasionally participated in the sports and arts events, but the college did not allow the celebrations to be as colorful. The college provides enough facilities for the course. Our college has enough library resources for the curriculum, which is more than the number of faculty members.
Faculty: There are more freshers faculty members than seniors, especially for departmental subjects, but they are very helpful and work hard to cover their syllabus. Civil Engineering is always an industry-ready course, but we need the ability to bring our imagination, and we can't always secure high payrolls. We have a uniform curriculum all over Kerala under APJAKTU. For me, the curriculum is somewhat new and incorporates fresh subjects. The difficulty level is respective with students, and I cannot score that.
Other: Civil Engineering is always a high-paying job, like wine, and when it ages, we get high payrolls, so I chose it. After the course, we can get a job easily anywhere, but we need experience and proficiency in subjects (in theory and practicals) to stand on our feet, which is lacking from the curriculum. The college only focuses on marks on paper and teaches only what appears in exams, and not for practical expertise, which we have to learn by experience.
